Issues related to the removal of a testicle?

Five years ago, I had one testicle removed and now I feel that one side looks flat and unattractive.
Can I insert a prosthetic? Or is it not possible due to scrotal atrophy? Additionally, does having only one testicle result in lower testosterone levels?

A-Kai, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2020/03/20

Dr. Lin Wenxu reply Urology

Hello, A-Kai: 1.
Yes.
2.
As long as the remaining testicular function is normal, there will be no issues.

Yes, you can use a prosthetic after losing a testicle. Many men who have undergone orchiectomy (the surgical removal of a testicle) choose to use a prosthetic testicle for cosmetic reasons. These prosthetics are designed to mimic the appearance and weight of a natural testicle, helping to restore a more balanced look to the scrotum.
When a testicle is removed, the remaining testicle typically compensates for the loss by continuing to produce testosterone, the hormone responsible for male characteristics and reproductive functions. In most cases, men with one testicle can maintain normal testosterone levels, especially if the remaining testicle is healthy. However, there are instances where testosterone levels may drop, particularly if the remaining testicle is not functioning optimally due to age, injury, or other health conditions.
If you are concerned about your testosterone levels after losing a testicle, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare provider. They can perform blood tests to measure your testosterone levels and assess whether any treatment is necessary.
Regarding the use of a prosthetic, it is important to consult with a urologist or a specialist in male reproductive health. They can provide guidance on the types of prosthetics available, the procedure for insertion, and any potential risks involved. The prosthetic can be inserted during a minor surgical procedure, and it is typically well-tolerated by patients.
In terms of scrotal shrinkage, it is common for the scrotum to appear less full after the removal of a testicle. However, the use of a prosthetic can help restore the appearance of fullness and symmetry. The prosthetic is usually placed in the scrotum, and it does not interfere with the function of the remaining testicle.
In summary, using a prosthetic testicle after losing one is a viable option for many men, and it can significantly improve self-esteem and body image. If you have concerns about testosterone levels or the cosmetic aspects of losing a testicle, it is best to discuss these with your healthcare provider, who can offer personalized advice and treatment options.
