Redness and swelling of the palm?

In the past few days, I suddenly noticed some pain in the hypothenar region of my right hand while using the mouse.
Upon lifting my hand, I saw a small red swollen area that looks like a blister but is not raised.
It doesn't hurt when touched, but it does hurt when pressed.
I'm not sure what this symptom is.
If you need pictures, I can send them via email.

Hello: A diagnosis of skin diseases cannot be made solely based on a textual description.
If you have photos, you can provide a link to an online album for reference.
However, if the skin lesions do not improve or worsen, it is advisable to consult a nearby dermatologist for diagnosis and treatment.
Thank you!

More Info

Redness and swelling in the palm, particularly in the area of the hypothenar eminence (the fleshy part at the base of the little finger), can be caused by a variety of factors. Based on your description, it seems that you are experiencing localized pain, redness, and swelling that is not accompanied by significant tenderness unless pressure is applied. Here are some potential causes and considerations:
1. Overuse or Strain: Given that you mentioned using a mouse frequently, it is possible that you are experiencing symptoms related to repetitive strain injury (RSI). This condition occurs when the same motion is repeated over time, leading to inflammation and discomfort in the muscles, tendons, or nerves in the affected area. The hypothenar muscles can become strained from prolonged gripping or awkward positioning while using a mouse.

2. Tendonitis: Inflammation of the tendons in the hand can also lead to localized swelling and pain. This is often due to repetitive motions or overuse, similar to RSI. If the tendons in the hypothenar region are affected, you may notice swelling and discomfort.

3. Ganglion Cyst: A ganglion cyst is a fluid-filled sac that can develop near joints or tendons in the hand. While they are usually benign and painless, they can sometimes cause discomfort or pressure on surrounding structures. If the cyst is located in the hypothenar area, it may present as a swollen area that feels firm but is not painful unless pressed.

4. Infection: Though less likely given your description, an infection in the skin or underlying tissues could cause redness and swelling. If the area becomes increasingly painful, warm to the touch, or if you develop a fever, it is essential to seek medical attention.

5. Allergic Reaction or Dermatitis: If you have recently come into contact with a new substance (such as a different mouse material or cleaning product), you might be experiencing an allergic reaction or contact dermatitis. This would typically present with redness, swelling, and possibly itching.

6. Other Conditions: Conditions such as arthritis or gout can also cause localized swelling and pain in the hand. However, these are usually accompanied by other systemic symptoms or joint involvement.

Recommendations:
- Rest: Give your hand a break from repetitive activities. Try to alternate tasks or take regular breaks to reduce strain.

- Ice Application: Applying ice to the affected area can help reduce swelling and alleviate pain. Use an ice pack wrapped in a cloth for 15-20 minutes at a time.

- Over-the-Counter Pain Relief: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen can help manage pain and reduce inflammation.

- Ergonomic Adjustments: Evaluate your workstation setup. Ensure that your mouse and keyboard are positioned to minimize strain on your hands and wrists. Consider using an ergonomic mouse or wrist support.

- Monitor Symptoms: Keep an eye on the symptoms. If the redness and swelling persist, worsen, or if you develop additional symptoms (such as fever, increased pain, or spreading redness), it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation.

In conclusion, while your symptoms may be related to overuse or strain, it is essential to monitor the situation closely. If you have any concerns or if the symptoms do not improve with conservative measures, seeking medical advice is the best course of action.
