Uncertain if a fishbone has been swallowed?
Hello, Doctor.
During lunch, while eating sweet and sour fried fish, I suddenly felt a sensation of something stuck in my throat, and I'm not sure if it was a small fish bone or just the crunchy texture of the fried fish.
I tried to vomit to check, but nothing came out, so I drank some water.
After that, I continued eating without any pain or sharp sensations.
However, I noticed that if my throat gets very dry, I experience a sudden pain that eases after drinking water.
I would like to ask if a dry throat can cause a sharp pain.
I'm a bit worried that a fish bone might be stuck in there, but I'm also concerned that if I go to an ENT specialist and have no symptoms, it might be difficult to explain.
Generally, if a fish bone is lodged in the throat or esophagus, would it cause persistent pain? My boyfriend thinks I probably didn't swallow a fish bone or that it has already passed into my stomach, and he advised me to drink more water.
However, I'm still a bit worried and unsure if I should visit the clinic tomorrow for my cold and check on this issue as well.

Hello: Generally, when a fishbone gets stuck in the throat, there is often noticeable pain or discomfort.
If there is no significant pain while swallowing, you can initially monitor the situation.
However, if you are concerned, you may visit an otolaryngologist for examination and confirmation.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely, Dr.

More Info
When it comes to swallowing fish bones, it’s understandable to feel concerned, especially if you experience discomfort or a sensation of something being stuck in your throat. Here’s a detailed overview of what to consider and when to seek care from an ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat) specialist.
Understanding the Symptoms
1. Initial Sensation: After swallowing a fish bone, many people report a feeling of something lodged in their throat. This sensation can be exacerbated by dryness in the throat, which may lead to discomfort or a sharp pain. If you feel a "catching" sensation but do not experience significant pain, it may indicate that the bone is not lodged but rather that your throat is irritated.
2. Dryness and Pain: A dry throat can indeed cause discomfort and a feeling of tightness or pain. This is often due to the mucous membranes in the throat becoming irritated. Drinking water can help alleviate this sensation, as it moistens the throat and may help dislodge any small particles.
3. Absence of Pain: If you continue to eat and do not experience pain or discomfort, it is a good sign that the bone may have either passed through or is not lodged in a problematic way. Fish bones can sometimes be small and flexible, allowing them to pass through the digestive tract without causing harm.
When to Seek Medical Attention
1. Persistent Symptoms: If you experience ongoing pain, difficulty swallowing, or a sensation of something stuck in your throat for more than a few hours, it is advisable to seek medical attention. An ENT specialist can perform an examination to determine if a bone is indeed lodged in your throat or esophagus.
2. Severe Pain or Discomfort: If you develop severe pain, especially if it radiates to the chest or back, or if you have difficulty breathing, you should seek emergency care immediately. These could be signs of a more serious issue.
3. Signs of Infection: If you notice symptoms such as fever, swelling in the throat, or pus, these could indicate an infection that requires prompt medical evaluation.
4. Changes in Symptoms: If your symptoms change or worsen, such as developing a cough, vomiting, or blood in your saliva, these are also indicators that you should seek medical care.
What to Expect at the ENT
If you decide to visit an ENT specialist, they will likely perform a physical examination, which may include:
- Visual Inspection: Using a laryngoscope to look at your throat and esophagus.
- Imaging: In some cases, imaging studies like X-rays may be necessary to locate any foreign bodies.
- Treatment Options: If a fish bone is found, the doctor may use specialized tools to remove it. If it has passed into the stomach, they may advise you to monitor your symptoms.
Conclusion
In summary, while it’s common to feel anxious after swallowing a fish bone, many cases resolve without intervention. Staying hydrated and monitoring your symptoms is key. If you experience persistent discomfort or any concerning symptoms, don’t hesitate to seek medical advice. It’s always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to your health.
