The inside of the nose is red?
Hello, doctor.
I'm back again, and this time it's a bit long, so I appreciate your help.
My nosebleed symptoms have improved; I only experience occasional bleeding that lasts just a few minutes before stopping.
I have seen different ENT specialists, and although they all said my nose was injured and told me not to worry, one doctor mentioned during my last visit that my nasal passages were very red and advised me to go to the hospital for further examination, just in case it was a serious condition.
This made me quite anxious.
I haven't had a nosebleed for a while, and I have been taking my medication and applying it as prescribed.
Why is it still red inside? It's very noticeable when I look in the mirror.
I know I have poor blood circulation and allergic rhinitis.
If it can heal on its own, what can I eat or drink? Thank you, doctor.

Dr. Zheng Jueyi reply Otolaryngology
Hello: Currently, it is unclear whether the clinic physician has made any special findings, as the nose is composed of vascular mucosal tissue, which often appears reddish and is usually a normal phenomenon.
If there is no significant pain or bleeding, it is advisable to observe the situation.
If there are concerns, a follow-up examination can be conducted for confirmation.
Wishing you safety and health.

More Info
Nasal redness and bleeding can be concerning symptoms, and it's understandable that you're feeling anxious about them. Based on your description, it seems that you have experienced occasional nosebleeds and persistent nasal redness, which have prompted you to seek medical advice. Let's delve into the potential causes, concerns, and remedies for your condition.
Causes of Nasal Redness and Bleeding
1. Dry Nasal Mucosa: One of the most common causes of nasal bleeding is dryness in the nasal passages. This can be exacerbated by environmental factors such as low humidity, especially during winter months or in air-conditioned spaces. Dryness can lead to cracks in the nasal mucosa, resulting in bleeding.
2. Nasal Trauma: Frequent nose blowing, picking, or even vigorous sneezing can cause trauma to the delicate blood vessels in the nasal lining, leading to bleeding. You mentioned that you have been experiencing nasal congestion, which may have led to increased forceful blowing.
3. Allergic Rhinitis: Allergies can cause inflammation and swelling of the nasal mucosa, making it more susceptible to bleeding. If you have a history of allergic rhinitis, this could be a contributing factor.
4. Infections: Viral infections, such as the common cold, can irritate the nasal passages and lead to increased vascularity and fragility of the mucosa, resulting in bleeding.
5. Underlying Medical Conditions: Conditions that affect blood clotting or blood vessel integrity, such as hypertension or certain blood disorders, can also lead to recurrent nosebleeds.
Concerns
While occasional nosebleeds are common and often benign, persistent redness and bleeding warrant further investigation. The fact that multiple doctors have noted the redness in your nasal passages suggests that there may be an underlying issue that needs to be addressed. It's essential to rule out any serious conditions, such as:
- Chronic Rhinosinusitis: This condition can lead to persistent inflammation of the nasal passages and sinuses, causing symptoms like nasal congestion, discharge, and sometimes bleeding.
- Nasal Polyps: These are non-cancerous growths in the nasal passages that can cause obstruction and lead to inflammation and bleeding.
- Vascular Malformations: Rarely, abnormal blood vessel formations in the nasal cavity can lead to recurrent bleeding.
Remedies and Management
1. Humidification: Using a humidifier in your home can help maintain moisture in the air, reducing dryness in your nasal passages.
2. Nasal Saline Sprays: Regular use of saline nasal sprays can help keep the nasal mucosa moist and promote healing.
3. Avoid Irritants: Stay away from smoke, strong odors, and allergens that can exacerbate nasal inflammation.
4. Gentle Nose Blowing: If you need to blow your nose, do so gently to avoid causing trauma to the nasal lining.
5. Hydration: Drink plenty of fluids to help keep your mucous membranes hydrated.
6. Medication: If you have allergic rhinitis, consider using antihistamines or nasal corticosteroids as prescribed by your doctor to manage your symptoms.
7. Follow-Up Care: Since you have been advised to seek further evaluation, consider scheduling an appointment with an ENT specialist for a thorough examination, including possible nasal endoscopy, to assess the condition of your nasal passages and identify any underlying issues.
In conclusion, while occasional nasal bleeding can be a common issue, persistent symptoms should not be ignored. It's crucial to follow up with your healthcare provider to ensure that any underlying conditions are addressed appropriately. By taking proactive steps to manage your nasal health, you can reduce the frequency of symptoms and improve your overall well-being.
