Nasal redness and swelling with pain?
Hello, doctor.
Three days ago, I felt pain in my nasal bridge, and it hurts when touched.
Yesterday, I noticed it became slightly red and swollen.
Is it due to acne? Is it a skin issue or a nasal issue? Thank you!
Rui, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2012/05/17
Dr. Xu Jiazhen reply Otolaryngology
This type of issue is often due to folliculitis in the nasal area or a staphylococcal infection.
With proper treatment, it should heal quickly.
Sincerely, Hsu Chia-Chen.

Understanding the symptoms you're experiencing on your nose is crucial for determining the appropriate treatment. Based on your description of painful redness and swelling on the bridge of your nose, there are several potential causes to consider, including acne, skin infections, or even conditions like rosacea or folliculitis.
1. Acne: If the redness and swelling are localized to a specific area and you have a history of acne, it could be a pimple or cyst forming. Acne can cause localized inflammation and pain, especially if the pore becomes clogged with oil and dead skin cells, leading to a breakout.
2. Folliculitis: This is an inflammation of the hair follicles, which can occur anywhere on the body, including the face. It can be caused by bacteria, fungi, or irritation from shaving or other forms of hair removal. Folliculitis typically presents as small red bumps that can be painful or itchy.
3. Infection: If the area is significantly swollen, warm to the touch, or if you develop a fever, it may indicate an infection. Conditions such as cellulitis, which is a bacterial skin infection, can cause redness, swelling, and pain. This requires prompt medical attention.
4. Rosacea: This chronic skin condition often affects the face, leading to redness, swelling, and sometimes acne-like bumps. It can be triggered by various factors, including stress, certain foods, and temperature changes.
5. Allergic Reaction: If you've recently used new skincare products or cosmetics, an allergic reaction could cause localized redness and swelling. This would typically be accompanied by itching or a burning sensation.
Recommendations:
- Avoid Touching: Try not to touch or pick at the area, as this can exacerbate inflammation and potentially lead to infection.
- Cold Compress: Applying a cold compress can help reduce swelling and provide some pain relief. Make sure to wrap ice in a cloth to avoid direct contact with the skin.
- Over-the-Counter Treatments: If it is indeed acne, topical treatments containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid can be effective. For folliculitis, an antibacterial wash may help. If you suspect an allergic reaction, consider taking an antihistamine.
- Monitor Symptoms: Keep an eye on the symptoms. If the redness and swelling worsen, or if you develop additional symptoms such as fever, increased pain, or pus, it’s essential to seek medical attention.
- Consult a Dermatologist: Given the potential for various underlying causes, consulting a dermatologist would be beneficial. They can provide a proper diagnosis and recommend appropriate treatments based on your specific condition.
Conclusion:
In summary, while your symptoms could be related to acne, they may also indicate other skin conditions or infections. It's important to monitor the situation closely and seek professional medical advice if the symptoms persist or worsen. Early intervention can prevent complications and lead to more effective treatment outcomes.
