Nipple and areola, breast issues?
Hello Doctor: I have had an inverted nipple issue since childhood, but I never took it seriously back then, and my mother said it would protrude once I grew up.
Now that I'm in the ninth grade, not only is one breast larger than the other, but my nipples still haven't protruded.
My aunt bought me a breast pump, and after using it, my nipples temporarily protruded, but I noticed they look quite strange.
There is even a small bump on top of the nipple, and my nipples look different from others; I think they look wrinkled and odd, but I'm not sure how to describe it.
I suspect that because my nipples were inverted for so long, they might be a bit painful when touched now that they are protruding.
Additionally, there was some white substance on top of my nipple that I don't know what it is.
I hope it's not a health issue?

More Info
Dear Student,
It's completely understandable to feel concerned about changes in your body, especially during the teenage years when many physical changes occur. Let's break down your concerns regarding nipple and breast issues, including inverted nipples, breast asymmetry, and any unusual growths or secretions.
Inverted Nipples
Inverted nipples, which you mentioned having since childhood, are relatively common and can occur for various reasons. They may be due to the way the breast tissue develops or the structure of the milk ducts. In many cases, inverted nipples do not indicate any underlying health issues and can be a normal variant of breast anatomy. However, if you notice any changes, such as a sudden inversion of a previously normal nipple or any associated pain, it would be wise to consult a healthcare professional.
Breast Asymmetry
It's also normal for breasts to be asymmetrical, especially during puberty when they are still developing. Many girls experience one breast growing faster than the other, and this often evens out over time. If you are concerned about the size difference, remember that most women have some degree of asymmetry, and it usually becomes less noticeable as you mature.
Use of a Breast Pump
Using a breast pump or suction device to try to correct inverted nipples can sometimes lead to temporary changes, such as the nipple becoming more protruded. However, it’s important to use such devices cautiously and under guidance, as improper use can cause discomfort or injury. If you notice any unusual growths, such as the small bump you mentioned, or if the nipple appears wrinkled or has a different texture, it’s advisable to have it evaluated by a healthcare provider.
Discharge from the Nipple
The white substance you observed could be normal secretions, which can occur due to hormonal changes, especially during puberty. However, if the discharge is persistent, changes in color, or has an unusual odor, it’s essential to seek medical advice to rule out any potential issues.
Pain and Sensitivity
Experiencing pain or sensitivity, especially after using a breast pump, can be normal, particularly if your nipples are not accustomed to being stimulated in that way. If the pain persists or worsens, it’s important to consult with a healthcare professional who can provide guidance tailored to your situation.
When to Seek Medical Advice
While many of these issues can be benign and part of normal development, you should seek medical advice if:
- You notice significant changes in the shape or texture of your breasts or nipples.
- There is persistent pain or discomfort that does not improve.
- You observe any unusual growths or changes in discharge.
Conclusion
In summary, while it’s natural to have concerns about your body, many of the changes you’re experiencing are common during puberty. It’s important to maintain open communication with a trusted adult, such as your mother or a healthcare provider, who can help you navigate these changes. If you feel uncomfortable discussing these issues with your mother, consider writing down your concerns or asking for a private appointment with a healthcare professional. Remember, your health and comfort are paramount, and seeking help is a positive step toward understanding your body better.
Take care, and don't hesitate to reach out for support when you need it.
