Genital itching issues?

I am a high school senior, and recently I have been experiencing itching in my vulva, and my clitoris also feels a bit itchy often.
It's not extremely itchy, but it occurs frequently, and I feel like something is crawling, although I haven't seen any bugs.
There are white flakes on my underwear, my labia are slightly red, and sometimes I experience a prickling pain in the pubic hair area, along with persistent itching.
Additionally, when I wipe after using the bathroom, I notice one or two red spots and yellow strands, and almost every time I wipe, there are some black spots.
Could this possibly be pubic lice? I have mentioned this to my family, but I haven't seen a doctor yet.

Xin, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2020/05/02

Vaginal infections are the most common conditions affecting women, with various contributing factors.
Treatment methods require comprehensive health education, and it is recommended to seek evaluation from a specialist in obstetrics and gynecology at an outpatient clinic.

Vulvar itching can be a common yet distressing symptom, particularly for young individuals such as yourself. It is important to understand that itching in the vulvar area can arise from a variety of causes, and recognizing these can help in determining when to seek medical attention.

Possible Causes of Vulvar Itching
1. Infections: One of the most common causes of vulvar itching is a yeast infection, which can lead to symptoms such as itching, redness, and a thick white discharge. Bacterial vaginosis and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) like trichomoniasis can also cause similar symptoms.

2. Skin Conditions: Conditions such as eczema or psoriasis can affect the vulvar area, leading to itching and irritation. Contact dermatitis, which is a reaction to soaps, detergents, or other irritants, can also be a culprit.

3. Hygiene Products: The use of scented soaps, bubble baths, or feminine hygiene sprays can irritate the vulvar area, leading to itching and discomfort.

4. Pubic Lice (Crabs): While you mentioned not seeing any bugs, pubic lice can cause itching and discomfort in the genital area. They are small parasites that can be difficult to detect without close inspection.

5. Hormonal Changes: Fluctuations in hormone levels, particularly during menstruation or due to contraceptive use, can lead to vulvar itching.

6. Other Causes: Conditions such as vulvodynia, which is chronic pain or discomfort in the vulvar area, can also present with itching. Allergies to certain materials, such as latex in condoms, can contribute to symptoms as well.

When to Seek Help
It is advisable to seek medical attention if you experience any of the following:
- Persistent itching that does not improve with over-the-counter treatments.

- The presence of unusual discharge, especially if it has a strong odor or unusual color.

- Redness, swelling, or sores in the vulvar area.

- Pain during urination or sexual intercourse.

- Any other concerning symptoms that affect your daily life.

Importance of Medical Evaluation
Given your symptoms, including the presence of white flakes, redness, and occasional pain, it would be prudent to consult a healthcare professional. A doctor can perform a thorough examination and may conduct tests to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms. This could include a pelvic exam, swabs for infections, or allergy testing.

Conclusion
While it may feel uncomfortable to discuss these symptoms, seeking medical advice is crucial for proper diagnosis and treatment. Ignoring the symptoms may lead to worsening discomfort or complications. Remember, healthcare providers are trained to handle such issues sensitively and professionally. Taking the step to visit a doctor can provide you with relief and peace of mind.
