Penile inquiry

Hello, Dr.
Li.
I have some questions I would like to ask you.
I noticed while showering that the tip of my penis seems to be thicker than the base.
Is this normal? I'm worried that it might be swollen due to recent masturbation.
Also, I can see a greenish vein on the left side of the penis; is that okay? When I have an erection, there is some redness on the right side as well.
Lastly, I visited a urologist last week and asked the doctor to check if there were any warts on the surface of the glans.
The doctor examined it for a long time and said everything was fine, and that what I mentioned was not an issue.
I just want to ask if it's normal for the surface of the glans to not be completely smooth, as it seems to have some small marks or appears to have indentations under certain lighting.
The previous doctor mentioned that the small bumps I thought I saw were just an optical illusion, so I shouldn't worry about them.
Thank you for your response.

I understand the issues you're mentioning, but just like what the outpatient physician said, it probably doesn't matter much.
I think you're spending too much time worrying about it.

When it comes to concerns about penis health and anatomy, it's important to understand that variations in size, shape, and appearance are quite common and often normal. Based on your description, let's address each of your concerns systematically.

1. Thickness at the Tip of the Penis: It is not unusual for the tip of the penis (the glans) to appear slightly thicker than the shaft. This can be due to natural anatomical variations, and it may also be influenced by factors such as arousal or recent sexual activity, including masturbation. If you notice any significant changes in size or shape that are accompanied by pain, discomfort, or other unusual symptoms, it would be wise to consult a healthcare professional.

2. Visible Blood Vessels: The appearance of veins on the penis, including a greenish hue, is generally normal. The penis has a rich blood supply, and the visibility of veins can vary based on factors such as temperature, arousal, and body fat percentage. When you are erect, the increased blood flow can make these veins more prominent. If there are no signs of swelling, pain, or discoloration that suggests a problem, this is typically not a cause for concern.

3. Surface Texture of the Glans: The glans of the penis is not always perfectly smooth, and minor irregularities or textures can be completely normal. The skin on the glans can have small variations, including tiny bumps or indentations, which are often harmless. These can be due to natural anatomical features or the presence of sebaceous glands. If a healthcare provider has examined your glans and found no signs of infection or abnormal growths, it is likely that what you are observing is normal.

4. Concerns About Warts or Other Lesions: It’s good that you had a urologist examine your glans for any signs of warts or other lesions. Genital warts, caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), can appear as small, rough bumps. If your doctor has assured you that there are no such concerns, you can feel relieved. Regular check-ups and being aware of any changes in your genital area are important for maintaining sexual health.

5. General Health and Hygiene: Maintaining good hygiene is crucial for penis health. Regular washing with mild soap and water, avoiding irritants, and wearing breathable underwear can help prevent infections and other issues. If you experience any discomfort, unusual discharge, or persistent changes in appearance, it’s advisable to seek medical attention.

In summary, many of the variations you are noticing are likely normal anatomical features. However, if you continue to have concerns or if any symptoms develop, such as pain, swelling, or changes in color, it’s important to consult a healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation. Regular check-ups with a urologist can help ensure that any potential issues are addressed early on. Remember, open communication with your healthcare provider about any concerns you have is key to maintaining your sexual health.
