Yaz oral contraceptive pill

I would like to ask, I am currently taking Yaz birth control pills and I am around the tenth pill of my second pack, but I have noticed brown discharge for about three days.
If I engage in sexual intercourse, will I get pregnant? Should I stop taking the pills? If there is ejaculation inside on the 24th, will I get pregnant? Do I need to take a pregnancy test?

Māomī, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2020/05/22

Dr. Cao Guotao reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, please continue taking the remaining medication as it provides contraceptive effects.
Monitor for any similar issues next month, and if they persist, I recommend switching to a different contraceptive pill.
Wishing you good health.

Brown discharge while on birth control pills can be concerning, but it is often not a cause for alarm. The appearance of brown discharge, especially when you are taking hormonal contraceptives like Yaz (the brand name for drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol), can be attributed to several factors.
Firstly, brown discharge typically indicates old blood that is being expelled from the body. This can happen for various reasons, including hormonal fluctuations, which are common when starting or switching birth control methods. When you begin taking birth control pills, your body may take some time to adjust to the new hormone levels, leading to breakthrough bleeding or spotting, which can appear brown in color. This is especially common in the first few months of starting a new contraceptive regimen.

Regarding your concern about the risk of pregnancy, if you have been taking your birth control pills consistently and correctly, the likelihood of becoming pregnant is significantly reduced. Birth control pills are designed to prevent ovulation, and when taken as directed, they are over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy. However, if you missed any doses or took the pills inconsistently, this could increase the risk of pregnancy.
If you had unprotected intercourse during the time you experienced brown discharge, it is important to consider whether you have been compliant with your pill regimen. If you have taken your pills as prescribed, the chances of pregnancy are low, even if you experienced some spotting. However, if you are concerned about the possibility of pregnancy, taking a home pregnancy test after a missed period can provide clarity.
As for whether you should stop taking the pills, it is generally not recommended to discontinue birth control without consulting your healthcare provider. Stopping the pills can lead to a return of your menstrual cycle and may cause further hormonal fluctuations. If the brown discharge persists or is accompanied by other symptoms such as severe pain, heavy bleeding, or unusual discharge, it would be wise to consult your healthcare provider for further evaluation.

In summary, brown discharge while on birth control pills is often a normal occurrence related to hormonal changes. If you have been taking your pills consistently, the risk of pregnancy is low. However, if you have concerns or if the discharge continues, it is advisable to speak with your healthcare provider for personalized guidance and reassurance.
