Autonomic Nervous System Dysregulation Panic

Two weeks ago, I was diagnosed with autonomic nervous system dysfunction and panic disorder at a hospital in China.
I've been experiencing anxiety and panic attacks over the past few weeks.
The doctor prescribed me Xanax to take as needed.
Three days ago, I encountered a situation that made me feel more relaxed, and I wanted to relieve some stress since I am unmarried.
As a result, I masturbated, but afterward, I felt chest tightness, panic, and anxiety.
Yesterday seemed better, but this afternoon, I felt like a young person with those kinds of thoughts, mixed with panic, which is very difficult to endure and feels strange.
I just took half a Xanax.
I would like to ask if I should not hold back and masturbate again, or should I hold back and try to shift my focus? Are there any medications in psychiatry that can help with these thoughts? Thank you, doctor.

Hello, internet user: I'm not entirely clear on your main issue, but I will do my best to respond based on my understanding.
Masturbation and feelings of chest tightness, panic, and anxiety should not be related.
Sexual desire is a normal physiological response, and generally, there is no need to suppress it with medication.
Since you are already seeing a psychiatrist, I recommend discussing your concerns in detail with your doctor during your next appointment.

Managing panic and anxiety stemming from autonomic nervous system disorders can be a complex and multifaceted process. It is essential to understand that the autonomic nervous system (ANS) plays a crucial role in regulating involuntary bodily functions, including heart rate, digestion, and respiratory rate. When the ANS is out of balance, it can lead to symptoms such as anxiety, panic attacks, and physical sensations like chest tightness or palpitations.

From your description, it seems that you have been experiencing heightened anxiety and panic symptoms, which can be exacerbated by various triggers, including stress and physical sensations. The fact that you have been prescribed a medication like "景安寧" (likely a form of benzodiazepine) indicates that your healthcare provider is addressing your acute anxiety symptoms. Benzodiazepines can provide rapid relief from anxiety but are typically recommended for short-term use due to the potential for dependence and tolerance.

Regarding your question about whether to engage in sexual activities such as masturbation as a way to relieve stress, it is essential to consider how it affects your mental state. Sexual activity can release endorphins and other hormones that may temporarily alleviate feelings of anxiety. However, if you find that it leads to increased feelings of panic or anxiety afterward, it may be worth exploring alternative methods of stress relief.

Here are some strategies that may help you manage your anxiety and panic symptoms more effectively:
1. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): This is a highly effective form of therapy for anxiety and panic disorders. CBT helps you identify and challenge negative thought patterns and develop coping strategies to manage anxiety.

2. Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques: Practices such as mindfulness meditation, deep breathing exercises, and progressive muscle relaxation can help calm the mind and body. These techniques can be particularly useful during moments of heightened anxiety or panic.

3. Regular Physical Activity: Engaging in regular exercise can help reduce anxiety levels and improve overall mental health. Exercise releases endorphins, which can enhance mood and reduce stress.

4. Healthy Lifestyle Choices: Maintaining a balanced diet, getting adequate sleep, and avoiding excessive caffeine and alcohol can positively impact your anxiety levels.

5. Medication Management: If you find that your current medication is not providing the relief you need, it is crucial to discuss this with your healthcare provider. They may consider adjusting your dosage or exploring other medication options that target anxiety without leading to unwanted side effects.

6. Support Groups or Counseling: Connecting with others who experience similar challenges can provide a sense of community and understanding. Support groups can be a valuable resource for sharing experiences and coping strategies.

7. Focus on Self-Care: Engaging in activities that you enjoy and that promote relaxation can help shift your focus away from anxiety. This could include hobbies, spending time with friends, or practicing self-compassion.

In terms of medication that may help with anxiety without leading to sexual thoughts or urges, it is essential to have an open discussion with your psychiatrist or healthcare provider. They can evaluate your symptoms and consider medications that may be more suitable for your needs, such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or other anxiolytics that do not have the same side effects as benzodiazepines.

Ultimately, managing panic and anxiety is a personal journey that may require a combination of therapeutic approaches, lifestyle changes, and medication. It is essential to work closely with your healthcare provider to find the best strategies for your individual situation. Remember that you are not alone in this process, and seeking help is a positive step toward improving your mental health.
