Yellow-green discharge?

Recently, I have noticed that my discharge has changed to a yellow-green color, occasionally with some white curd-like substance, but there is no odor.
Sometimes it itches.
I have had a previous yeast infection and I'm not sure if I have another one.
Do I need to see a doctor immediately? If so, why do I keep getting infections?

Xuan, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2020/06/05

Yellow-green discharge can be concerning, and understanding its potential causes is essential for determining whether you need to seek medical help. Discharge that is yellow or green in color can indicate several conditions, and while some may be benign, others may require medical attention.

Possible Causes of Yellow-Green Discharge
1. Bacterial Vaginosis (BV): This is a common condition caused by an imbalance of bacteria in the vagina. The discharge may appear yellow or green and often has a fishy odor, although you mentioned that yours does not have an odor. BV is not typically associated with severe symptoms but can lead to complications if left untreated.

2. Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): Certain STIs, such as gonorrhea or chlamydia, can cause yellow or green discharge. These infections may also present with other symptoms, including pain during urination or intercourse, and abdominal pain. It’s crucial to get tested if you suspect an STI.

3. Yeast Infection: While yeast infections typically cause a thick, white discharge resembling cottage cheese, some women may experience a yellowish discharge. You mentioned having a previous yeast infection, and it’s possible to have recurrent infections, especially if the underlying causes (like antibiotic use, hormonal changes, or diabetes) are not addressed.

4. Cervicitis: Inflammation of the cervix can lead to abnormal discharge. This condition can be caused by infections, including STIs or non-infectious causes like irritation from chemicals or allergens.

5. Hormonal Changes: Fluctuations in hormones, particularly during the menstrual cycle, can affect the color and consistency of vaginal discharge.

When to Seek Help
You should consider seeking medical attention if:
- The discharge persists or worsens.

- You experience additional symptoms such as itching, burning, or irritation.

- There is a change in the odor of the discharge.

- You have pain during intercourse or urination.

- You have a fever or other systemic symptoms.

Why Am I Experiencing Recurrent Infections?
Recurrent infections can be frustrating and may occur due to several reasons:
1. Antibiotic Use: If you have been on antibiotics, they can disrupt the natural flora of the vagina, leading to yeast infections or bacterial vaginosis.

2. Underlying Health Conditions: Conditions such as diabetes or immune system disorders can predispose you to infections.

3. Hormonal Imbalances: Changes in estrogen levels can affect the vaginal environment, making it more susceptible to infections.

4. Hygiene Practices: Over-washing or using harsh soaps can irritate the vaginal area, leading to infections.

5. Sexual Activity: New sexual partners or changes in sexual practices can introduce new bacteria, increasing the risk of infections.

Conclusion
Given your history of yeast infections and the current symptoms, it is advisable to consult a healthcare provider for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. They may perform a pelvic exam and possibly take samples for laboratory testing to determine the cause of the discharge. Early intervention can help prevent complications and recurrent infections, allowing you to manage your symptoms effectively. Remember, it’s always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to your health.
