After getting fixed dentures?
Hello, I just had my fixed dentures fitted last Friday, but they came off the next day when I ate something (regular fried rice).
This afternoon, I went back for a reattachment.
However, by tonight, my gums feel swollen and painful.
I would like to know if this is a normal reaction and if it will improve in a few days.

Hello: The adjustment period for new dentures is typically one week.
However, if you are experiencing significant discomfort, it is recommended to return to the original clinic for adjustments.
Thank you!

When it comes to post-installation issues with fixed dentures, experiencing discomfort or swelling in the gums is not uncommon, especially shortly after the procedure. It's important to understand that your mouth is adjusting to the new dental work, and this adjustment period can lead to some temporary discomfort. Here’s a detailed explanation of what you might be experiencing and some recommendations on how to manage it.
Understanding the Discomfort
1. Adjustment Period: After getting fixed dentures, your gums and surrounding tissues may need time to adapt to the new structure. This can lead to inflammation and discomfort as your body responds to the changes in your mouth.
2. Pressure and Fit: If the dentures are not fitting perfectly, they may exert pressure on certain areas of your gums, leading to pain or swelling. This is particularly likely if the dentures were recently installed and have not yet settled into their proper position.
3. Infection or Irritation: If the dentures were not properly cleaned before installation, or if there are rough edges that irritate the gums, this can lead to inflammation. Additionally, if food particles get trapped under the dentures, it can cause irritation and swelling.
4. Underlying Conditions: If you have pre-existing gum disease or other dental issues, these conditions can be exacerbated by the installation of new dentures, leading to increased discomfort.
Recommendations for Relief
1. Follow-Up with Your Dentist: If the swelling and pain persist beyond a few days, or if they worsen, it’s crucial to return to your dentist. They can assess the fit of the dentures and make necessary adjustments to alleviate pressure points.
2. Oral Hygiene: Maintain excellent oral hygiene to prevent infection. Gently brush your gums and the dentures (if removable) with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Rinse your mouth with warm salt water to help reduce inflammation and promote healing.
3. Pain Management: Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, can help manage discomfort. Always follow the dosage instructions on the package or those given by your healthcare provider.
4. Dietary Adjustments: Stick to soft foods that are easy to chew and won’t irritate your gums. Avoid hard, crunchy, or sticky foods until your gums have healed and you feel more comfortable.
5. Monitor Symptoms: Keep an eye on your symptoms. If you notice increased swelling, pus, or severe pain, these could be signs of an infection, and you should seek dental care immediately.
Conclusion
In summary, while some discomfort and swelling after the installation of fixed dentures can be normal, it’s essential to monitor your symptoms closely. If the discomfort persists or worsens, don’t hesitate to reach out to your dentist for further evaluation and adjustments. Proper care and communication with your dental professional will help ensure that your transition to fixed dentures is as smooth and comfortable as possible. Remember, your oral health is paramount, and addressing any issues early on can prevent more significant problems down the line.
