Pain under the rib cage?
Hello, doctor.
I would like to ask about an incident that happened when I was in the 6th grade.
I experienced severe pain in the lower left side of my ribcage, close to my stomach, which was so intense that I collapsed and couldn't get up.
Since that time, I have been experiencing intermittent sharp pains (although I no longer collapse, my body tends to curl up).
I'm curious about which organ might be causing this pain so that I have a direction for seeking medical attention.

Dr. Lin Minghui reply Gastroenterology and Hepatology
Hello, a 25-year-old female is experiencing intermittent sharp pain in the lower left side of the rib cage, near the stomach.
Possible causes could include neuropathic pain or gastrointestinal spasms.
The nearby anatomical structures include the esophagus, stomach, large intestine, small intestine, pancreas, spleen, kidneys, adrenal glands, pleura, peritoneum, nerves, and muscles.
If the symptoms persist or recur, it is recommended to seek outpatient medical consultation for a physical examination and palpation for clearer assessment.
Wishing you peace and health! Sincerely, Dr.

More Info
Left lower rib pain can be a concerning symptom, especially given your history of severe pain during childhood. Understanding the potential causes of this pain is crucial for determining the appropriate next steps for diagnosis and treatment.
Possible Causes of Left Lower Rib Pain
1. Gastrointestinal Issues: The left side of the abdomen houses several organs, including the stomach, spleen, and parts of the colon. Conditions such as gastritis, peptic ulcers, or splenic issues can cause pain in this area. For instance, splenic enlargement or rupture can lead to significant pain and discomfort.
2. Musculoskeletal Problems: Pain in the rib area can also stem from musculoskeletal issues, such as costochondritis (inflammation of the cartilage connecting the ribs to the sternum) or muscle strain. These conditions can cause sharp or aching pain that may worsen with movement or certain positions.
3. Kidney Issues: The left kidney is located towards the back of the abdomen, and conditions such as kidney stones or infections can cause referred pain to the lower rib area. This pain is often accompanied by other symptoms like changes in urination or fever.
4. Nerve Compression or Irritation: Conditions such as herniated discs in the thoracic spine can lead to nerve compression, resulting in pain that radiates to the rib area. This type of pain may be sharp and can be exacerbated by certain movements or positions.
5. Cardiovascular Concerns: While less common, it’s important to consider that pain in the left rib area could be related to heart issues, especially if accompanied by other symptoms like shortness of breath or radiating pain to the arm or jaw.
Next Steps
Given your history of severe pain and the recurring nature of your symptoms, it is advisable to seek medical evaluation. Here are some steps you can take:
1. Consult a Healthcare Provider: Schedule an appointment with a primary care physician or a specialist, such as a gastroenterologist or orthopedic doctor, depending on your symptoms. It’s essential to provide a detailed history of your pain, including when it occurs, its intensity, and any associated symptoms.
2. Diagnostic Tests: Your doctor may recommend imaging studies such as X-rays, ultrasound, or CT scans to evaluate the organs in the area and rule out any serious conditions. Blood tests may also be necessary to check for signs of infection or inflammation.
3. Symptom Diary: Keeping a diary of your symptoms can be helpful. Note when the pain occurs, its intensity, duration, and any activities that seem to trigger it. This information can assist your healthcare provider in making a diagnosis.
4. Pain Management: In the meantime, over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen may help alleviate discomfort. However, consult with your doctor before starting any medication, especially if you have underlying health conditions.
5. Lifestyle Modifications: If certain activities or positions exacerbate your pain, try to avoid them. Gentle stretching and strengthening exercises may also help, but it’s best to discuss these with a healthcare provider or physical therapist.
Conclusion
Understanding the potential causes of your left lower rib pain is the first step toward finding relief. Given your history and the nature of your symptoms, it is crucial to seek medical advice to rule out any serious conditions and to receive appropriate treatment. Early intervention can lead to better outcomes and improved quality of life.
