Recovery after cauliflower laser treatment?
About two weeks ago, I underwent laser treatment for penile warts, and now the wound is healing, but I have noticed dark spots (they are not raised when touched).
Could this be melanin deposition or a recurrence?

Dr. Ke Fangxu reply Surgery
If there is no elevation, the likelihood of pigmentation is higher.
It is recommended to observe for a period of time.
If any elevation develops, a follow-up medical consultation is necessary.

After undergoing penile laser surgery for condyloma, it's not uncommon to notice changes in the skin, including the appearance of black spots. These spots can be concerning, especially if they arise during the healing process. Based on the information provided, it seems that the black spots you are observing are likely due to hyperpigmentation rather than a recurrence of the condyloma.
Hyperpigmentation occurs when there is an excess production of melanin, the pigment responsible for the color of our skin. This can happen for several reasons, particularly after surgical procedures. When the skin is injured, as it is during laser surgery, the body responds by increasing melanin production in the affected area as part of the healing process. This is often referred to as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). It is characterized by darkened areas of skin that can develop after inflammation or injury, and it is more common in individuals with darker skin tones.
In your case, since the black spots are flat and not raised, it further supports the idea that they are likely a result of hyperpigmentation rather than a sign of recurrence. Recurrence of condyloma would typically present as raised lesions or bumps, which would be different from flat discoloration.
It's also important to consider the timing of your surgery. Since you mentioned that it has been about half a month since the procedure, the healing process is still ongoing. During this time, it is normal for the skin to undergo various changes, including the formation of scabs, redness, and changes in pigmentation. These changes can take several weeks to months to resolve fully.
If the black spots persist or if you notice any new symptoms, such as itching, pain, or the development of new raised lesions, it would be advisable to consult your healthcare provider. They can assess the area and determine whether any further treatment is necessary. In some cases, dermatological treatments such as topical creams or laser therapy can help reduce hyperpigmentation if it becomes a cosmetic concern.
In summary, the appearance of black spots after penile laser surgery is likely a normal part of the healing process, often due to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. However, monitoring the area for any changes and maintaining communication with your healthcare provider is essential to ensure proper healing and address any concerns that may arise.
