Abdominal enlargement after uterine fibroid surgery?
I had an abdominal myomectomy one month ago.
I have always been afraid of tight clothing, so I originally bought my lower garments one size larger.
However, now that it has been a month post-surgery, the previously larger size is still too tight to wear, forcing me to continue using size two larger disposable underwear.
I can only zip my skirts halfway and cover it with a top, or wear dresses that make my belly very prominent, which is quite embarrassing.
1.
Is this a normal phenomenon after an abdominal myomectomy?
2.
Will I recover from this, or should I just buy all new clothes to hide my belly?
3.
When can I start doing abdominal exercises to improve my enlarged belly?
Thank you for your response.

After undergoing a myomectomy, particularly an open abdominal procedure, it is common to experience abdominal swelling and changes in body shape. This can be attributed to several factors, including surgical trauma, fluid accumulation, and the healing process. Here’s a comprehensive response to your questions regarding post-myomectomy abdominal swelling and exercise.
1. Is this abdominal swelling a normal phenomenon after myomectomy?
Yes, it is quite normal to experience abdominal swelling after a myomectomy. The surgical procedure involves making incisions in the abdominal wall, which can lead to inflammation and fluid retention in the area. This swelling can persist for several weeks or even months post-surgery, depending on individual healing rates and the extent of the surgery. Additionally, if you had a larger fibroid removed, the surrounding tissues may take longer to return to their pre-surgery state.
2. Will it eventually go back to normal, or should I consider buying new clothes?
In most cases, the swelling will gradually subside as your body heals. Typically, it can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months for the swelling to diminish significantly. However, if you notice that the swelling persists beyond a few months or if you experience any unusual symptoms (like severe pain or changes in bowel habits), it would be wise to consult your healthcare provider. As for your clothing, it may be beneficial to wait a little longer before investing in new wardrobe pieces. Your body may return to a more familiar shape as the swelling decreases, and you may find that your current clothes fit better in time.
3. When can I start doing abdominal exercises to improve my belly size?
It is crucial to approach post-operative recovery with caution. Generally, light activities can be resumed within a few weeks after surgery, but specific abdominal exercises should be avoided until you receive clearance from your healthcare provider. Most doctors recommend waiting at least 6 to 8 weeks post-surgery before engaging in more strenuous abdominal workouts. When you do start exercising, begin with gentle activities such as walking or pelvic tilts, gradually progressing to more intense exercises as your body allows.
In addition to physical activity, consider incorporating gentle stretching and breathing exercises to help alleviate discomfort and promote relaxation. It's also essential to maintain a balanced diet and stay hydrated, as these factors can significantly influence your recovery and overall well-being.
Lastly, if you have concerns about your recovery or if the swelling seems excessive, it is always best to consult your surgeon or a healthcare professional. They can provide personalized advice based on your specific situation and ensure that your recovery is on track. Remember, every individual's healing process is unique, and listening to your body is key to a successful recovery.
