Post-circumcision care
Hello Doctor, I just had a circumcision six days ago.
The doctor said I no longer need to bandage it, but I would like to ask a few questions:
1.
I noticed that the area around the stitches is swollen, resembling a ring, and it is painful to touch.
Is this a normal phenomenon?
2.
The doctor instructed me to disinfect the area around the stitches with Betadine twice a day, but there is still a little bleeding from underneath.
Is this normal?
3.
Since it has only been a week since the surgery, I still have some difficulty controlling my urine, and it sometimes splashes onto the stitches.
What should I do if this happens? Could it lead to inflammation, or should I buy some gauze to cover it myself? Thank you, Doctor.

Hello: 1) A ring around the wound is normal if there is no redness, swelling, or discharge.
Pain is normal.
2) It is abnormal but quite common; avoid erections as it may indicate that the wound has not healed properly.
3) After circumcision, it is possible to have a distribution of urine splatter.
If the wound is affected, it should be disinfected with povidone-iodine and kept dry.
Bandaging is usually not necessary.
Wishing you good health.

Post-circumcision care is crucial for ensuring a smooth recovery and minimizing complications. Here are some common concerns and recovery tips based on your questions:
1. Swelling Around the Sutures: It is not uncommon to experience some swelling around the sutured area after circumcision. This swelling can sometimes resemble a "ring" or "donut" shape, and it may be tender to the touch. This is typically a normal part of the healing process as the body responds to the surgical trauma. However, if the swelling is severe, persistent, or accompanied by increasing pain, redness, or discharge, it is essential to consult your healthcare provider to rule out any complications such as infection.
2. Discharge and Bleeding: A small amount of bleeding or oozing from the surgical site can occur in the days following the procedure. This is generally normal, especially if you are following your doctor's instructions for care, such as cleaning the area with antiseptic solutions like Betadine (povidone-iodine). If the bleeding is minimal and stops on its own, it is usually not a cause for concern. However, if you notice significant bleeding or if the discharge becomes foul-smelling, you should seek medical attention promptly, as these could be signs of infection.
3. Urination and Care of the Surgical Site: It is common for patients to experience some difficulty with urination immediately following circumcision, which may result in urine splattering. If urine comes into contact with the sutured area, it is generally not harmful, as urine is typically sterile. However, to minimize irritation, you can gently clean the area with warm water after urination. Avoid using harsh soaps or products that could irritate the sensitive skin. If you feel more comfortable using a sterile gauze pad to cover the area temporarily, that is acceptable, but ensure that it does not stick to the sutures.
Additional Recovery Tips:
- Pain Management: Over-the-counter pain relief medications, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, can help manage discomfort. Always follow the dosage instructions provided by your healthcare provider.
- Hygiene: Maintain good hygiene by gently cleaning the area with mild soap and water. Avoid soaking in baths or swimming pools until your doctor gives you the green light, as these can introduce bacteria to the healing site.
- Avoiding Irritation: Wear loose-fitting underwear to avoid friction against the surgical site. Tight clothing can exacerbate swelling and discomfort.
- Monitoring for Complications: Keep an eye out for signs of infection, such as increased redness, swelling, warmth, or discharge that is yellow or green in color. If you experience fever or chills, contact your healthcare provider immediately.
- Follow-Up Appointments: Attend all scheduled follow-up appointments with your healthcare provider to ensure proper healing and to address any concerns you may have.
In summary, while some swelling and minor bleeding are normal after circumcision, it is essential to monitor your symptoms closely. If you have any doubts or if your symptoms worsen, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for further evaluation and guidance. Proper care and attention during the recovery phase will help ensure a smooth healing process.
