Post-operative issues after circumcision?
Hello, I previously underwent a circumcision, and now that the wound has completely healed, I feel a bit of tightness at the base of my penis.
I suspect it might be due to the circumcision being too short, which causes some discomfort during erections, although it gets a bit better with time.
I would like to know if this discomfort could lead to any other issues aside from my personal discomfort, particularly regarding the shortness of the circumcision.
Thank you for your response.

Hello: Because the foreskin is elastic, it is difficult to say there is a problem with it being too short unless the erection is significantly larger (meaning a substantial increase in size).
This issue may sometimes be caused by more severe scarring, and it is advisable to have a physician evaluate the situation before determining how to improve it.
Wishing you good health.

More Info
After a circumcision, it is not uncommon for patients to experience some tightness or discomfort in the area, especially if the circumcision was performed in a way that may have left the skin too tight or if there was any excessive removal of tissue. This sensation can be particularly noticeable during erections, as the skin may not have enough elasticity to accommodate the increased size of the penis, leading to discomfort.
Potential Issues from Tightness After Circumcision
1. Pain and Discomfort: As you mentioned, the tightness can lead to discomfort during erections. This is often due to the skin not being able to stretch adequately. While this may improve over time as the tissues adapt, persistent discomfort should be evaluated by a healthcare provider.
2. Scar Tissue Formation: If the circumcision was performed too tightly, there is a risk of developing scar tissue, which can further restrict movement and lead to pain. Scar tissue can also affect the sensitivity of the area, potentially leading to sexual dysfunction or discomfort during sexual activity.
3. Frenulum Issues: The frenulum is a sensitive band of tissue on the underside of the penis. If the circumcision was too short or tight, it could lead to issues with the frenulum, including tearing or discomfort during erections.
4. Infection Risk: Although the risk is generally low, tightness can sometimes lead to areas where moisture can accumulate, potentially increasing the risk of infection. Proper hygiene is crucial to prevent any complications.
5. Psychological Impact: Discomfort or dissatisfaction with the surgical outcome can lead to anxiety or stress regarding sexual performance or body image. This psychological aspect should not be overlooked, as it can affect overall well-being.
Recommendations
- Consult a Urologist: If the tightness and discomfort persist, it is advisable to consult a urologist. They can assess the situation and determine if any corrective procedures are necessary, such as a revision circumcision or other interventions to relieve the tightness.
- Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of any changes in symptoms, including increased pain, swelling, or signs of infection (such as redness or discharge). If these occur, seek medical attention promptly.
- Gentle Stretching: Some patients find that gentle stretching exercises can help alleviate tightness over time. However, this should be done cautiously and ideally under the guidance of a healthcare professional.
- Avoid Irritants: Be mindful of any products that may irritate the area, such as certain soaps or lotions. Opt for gentle, fragrance-free products to minimize irritation.
Conclusion
While some tightness and discomfort after circumcision can be normal, especially in the initial healing phase, persistent issues warrant further evaluation. It is essential to communicate openly with your healthcare provider about your symptoms and concerns. They can provide tailored advice and treatment options to ensure your comfort and health moving forward.
