Post-Circumcision Concerns: Is Tightness and Sensitivity Normal? - Urology

Post-circumcision care

After the circumcision, the stitches fell out.
Initially, I had a long foreskin that could be pushed back manually when not erect, and during an erection, it would sometimes retract automatically, while other times I had to assist with my hand.
However, it seems that after the procedure, the glans has become difficult to retract (the doctor left a bit of skin).
The wound appears very narrow, and when retracted, it feels like it is being constricted by a rubber band, resembling a paraphimosis.
Is this normal? Additionally, I have experienced this while sleeping.

Hello: It could be scar tissue.
After the wound has healed, please return for a follow-up appointment and discuss with your physician whether medication may help improve it.
Wishing you good health.

Post-circumcision concerns regarding tightness and sensitivity are common, and it's important to understand the healing process and what to expect after the procedure. Circumcision, which involves the surgical removal of the foreskin, can lead to various sensations and changes in the anatomy of the penis, particularly in the early stages of recovery.

Firstly, it is normal to experience some tightness and sensitivity after circumcision. The glans (the head of the penis) is typically covered by the foreskin before the procedure, and once circumcision is performed, it becomes exposed. This exposure can lead to increased sensitivity as the skin adjusts to being in contact with clothing and the environment. Additionally, the healing process can cause some swelling and tightness around the surgical site, which may contribute to the sensation of constriction.

Regarding your specific concern about the tightness feeling like a rubber band constricting the penis, this could be a sign of swelling or scarring as the area heals. If the incision site is healing properly, it should gradually become less tight over time. However, if you feel that the tightness is excessive or if you experience pain, discomfort, or any other unusual symptoms, it is crucial to consult with your healthcare provider. They can assess whether the healing process is proceeding normally or if there are complications such as scarring or adhesions that may require intervention.

The fact that you mentioned the stitches falling out is also relevant. Stitches used in circumcision can dissolve on their own, but if they fall out prematurely or if there are concerns about the wound healing, it is advisable to seek medical advice. Your doctor can evaluate the site to ensure that it is healing correctly and that there are no signs of infection or other complications.

In terms of the ability to retract the glans, it is not uncommon for individuals to find it more difficult to expose the glans after circumcision, especially if the remaining skin is tight. This can improve as the area heals and the skin becomes more flexible. However, if you notice that the glans cannot be easily retracted or if there is significant discomfort, this could indicate a condition known as phimosis or a similar issue that may require further evaluation.

Lastly, regarding the sensation of "sleeping" or numbness, this can occur as a result of nerve endings being affected during the procedure. As healing progresses, normal sensation should gradually return. If numbness persists or worsens, it is essential to discuss this with your healthcare provider.

In summary, while some tightness and sensitivity post-circumcision can be normal, it is important to monitor your symptoms closely. If you have any concerns about the healing process, or if you experience significant discomfort, pain, or changes in sensation, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation and guidance. They can provide reassurance and address any potential complications that may arise during the recovery period.
