Sensitivity after getting fixed dentures?

I am currently undergoing a molar bridge treatment and have had the provisional crown temporarily cemented for about four days.
Usually, I don't feel much discomfort, but I do experience sensitivity when eating hot or cold foods.
I didn't have this issue when I was wearing the temporary crown, and I'm concerned that there might be a problem with the root canal treatment or the permanent crown.

Dear Mr.
Anonymous,
If you experience sensitivity or pain when consuming hot or cold foods after wearing your permanent dental bridge for four days, it is advisable to return for a check-up.
This may indicate issues with the fit of the bridge or your bite alignment.

Sincerely,
Dr.

Experiencing tooth sensitivity after getting a permanent dental bridge is a common concern among patients. It is important to understand that sensitivity, particularly to hot or cold stimuli, can arise for several reasons after the placement of a dental bridge.
Firstly, the sensitivity you are experiencing could be related to the dental bridge itself. When a dental bridge is placed, it involves the preparation of adjacent teeth, which may lead to temporary sensitivity. This is especially true if the teeth were previously healthy and are now exposed to the dental cement or the materials used in the bridge. The sensitivity could also be a sign that the bridge is not fitting properly, which can create gaps that allow temperature changes to affect the underlying tooth structure.

Another potential cause of sensitivity could be related to the underlying tooth structure, especially if you have had root canal treatment on the teeth that support the bridge. While root canal treatment is designed to alleviate pain and sensitivity by removing the nerve from the tooth, it can sometimes leave the tooth more susceptible to temperature changes. If the tooth was not completely sealed or if there is residual inflammation, this could also contribute to the sensitivity you are feeling.

It is also worth considering the materials used in the dental bridge. Some patients may have a sensitivity to certain metals or materials used in the construction of the bridge. If your bridge is made of a metal-ceramic combination, the metal may cause a reaction in some individuals, leading to discomfort or sensitivity.

In your case, since you mentioned that the sensitivity only started after the placement of the permanent bridge and was not present with the temporary bridge, it is advisable to return to your dentist for a thorough evaluation. Your dentist can check the fit of the bridge, assess the health of the supporting teeth, and determine if there are any underlying issues that need to be addressed. They may also consider adjusting the bite or the occlusion if they find that the bridge is too high or not aligned properly, which can also lead to discomfort.

In summary, while sensitivity after getting a dental bridge can be concerning, it is not uncommon. It is crucial to communicate your symptoms to your dentist, who can provide a comprehensive examination and determine the best course of action. If necessary, they may recommend adjustments, further treatment, or even a referral to a specialist if they suspect a more complex issue. Regular follow-ups and open communication with your dental care provider are key to ensuring the long-term success of your dental bridge and your overall oral health.
