Post-Circumcision Concerns: Healing and Sensations - Urology

Post-circumcision care

Hello, doctors.
I had a circumcision over two months ago.
Because I used a tissue adhesive, the wound healed quickly and the swelling subsided rapidly.
However, recently when I started engaging in sexual activity, I noticed that the entire area around the sutures feels hard and tight during an erection, almost like it's being constricted by a rubber band.
Is this a normal post-operative phenomenon?

Dr. Du Shixi reply Urology

Hello: The hardness is caused by scar tissue that lacks elasticity, but it usually improves over time.
If discomfort during erection does not improve, medical attention is still necessary.
Wishing you good health.

After circumcision, it is common for patients to experience various sensations and changes in the area as they heal. Given that you have had the procedure for over two months and have noticed a hard and tight feeling around the sutured area during erections, it is important to understand what could be happening and whether this is a normal part of the healing process.

Firstly, the sensation of tightness or hardness around the circumcision site can be attributed to several factors. One possibility is that the scar tissue is forming as part of the healing process. Scar tissue can feel firmer than the surrounding skin and may create a sensation of tightness, especially during erections when the skin stretches. This is often normal and may improve over time as the tissue continues to heal and remodel.

Another factor to consider is the possibility of excessive scar formation, known as hypertrophic scarring or keloids. These types of scars can be raised, firm, and may cause discomfort or a feeling of tightness. If the sensation is accompanied by pain, itching, or any signs of infection (such as redness, swelling, or discharge), it is crucial to consult your healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation.

Additionally, the use of a tissue adhesive or gel can influence the healing process. While these products are designed to promote faster healing and reduce scarring, individual responses can vary. If you have concerns about the material used or how it may be affecting your healing, discussing this with your doctor can provide clarity.

In terms of sexual activity, it is essential to ensure that you are comfortable and that any sensations you experience do not cause pain. If the tightness feels like it is constricting or causing discomfort during erections, it may be worth exploring options to alleviate this sensation. This could include gentle stretching exercises, using lubricants, or even discussing with your doctor about potential treatments to soften the scar tissue if necessary.

It is also important to monitor your overall healing process. If you notice any changes in sensation, such as increased pain, persistent tightness, or any unusual symptoms, it is advisable to seek medical advice. Your healthcare provider can assess your healing and determine if any interventions are needed.

In summary, while some tightness and hardness around the circumcision site can be a normal part of the healing process, it is essential to remain vigilant about any changes or discomfort. Regular follow-ups with your healthcare provider can help ensure that your healing is progressing well and address any concerns you may have. If you feel uncertain or uncomfortable about the sensations you are experiencing, do not hesitate to reach out to your doctor for further evaluation and guidance.
