One month after the excision of a benign breast tumor?
Hello, Doctor.
Thank you for taking the time to respond! I underwent bilateral breast surgery for benign tumors (papillomas) in early July.
The incisions were made near the areola, and now, a month later, I have noticed a hard lump under the areola where the incision is.
Is this situation normal? I don't have any other discomfort.
I appreciate your clarification! Thank you.

Hello! Postoperative wounds may swell and feel firm.
After surgery for a benign breast tumor, there is no need for skin tightening or gap filling; the gap will gradually fill with tissue fluid to compensate for the indentation.
Please return for a follow-up ultrasound.
Take care! Changhua Hospital cares about you!

More Info
After undergoing surgery for the removal of benign breast tumors, it is not uncommon to experience changes in the breast tissue, including the formation of hard lumps or areas of firmness around the surgical site. This phenomenon can be attributed to several factors related to the healing process.
Firstly, the hardness you are feeling is likely due to scar tissue formation. When the body heals after surgery, it goes through a process called fibrosis, where collagen is deposited in the area to repair the tissue. This can lead to a firm or hard feeling in the skin and underlying tissues. This is a normal part of the healing process and can take several months to resolve. Typically, the hardness may persist for about 2 to 6 months post-surgery, gradually softening as the scar matures.
Additionally, the sensation of firmness can also be exacerbated by swelling (edema) that often occurs after surgery. Swelling is a common response to surgical trauma and can take time to subside. If there is no pain, redness, or signs of infection, this is usually not a cause for concern. However, if you notice any significant changes, such as increased pain, swelling, or discharge from the incision site, it is important to consult your healthcare provider.
Regarding the occasional numbness or tingling sensation you mentioned, this can be attributed to nerve regeneration. During surgery, some nerves may be cut or irritated, leading to temporary changes in sensation. As the nerves heal, these sensations may fluctuate, which is generally considered normal. Supplementing with vitamin B12, as suggested in previous responses, can support nerve health and may help alleviate some of these symptoms.
In terms of recovery, it is essential to follow your surgeon's post-operative care instructions, which may include wearing a supportive bra to minimize movement and provide comfort. Gentle exercises, such as stretching and range-of-motion activities, can also be beneficial in promoting circulation and reducing stiffness, but these should be introduced gradually and only after consulting with your healthcare provider.
If you are concerned about the hardness or any other symptoms, it is always best to reach out to your surgeon or healthcare provider for a follow-up appointment. They can assess your healing progress and provide personalized recommendations based on your specific situation.
In summary, the hard lump you are experiencing after your benign breast tumor removal is likely a normal part of the healing process, related to scar tissue formation and potential swelling. While it can take several months for the area to soften, maintaining communication with your healthcare provider and following their guidance will ensure a smoother recovery. If you have any further concerns or if your symptoms change, do not hesitate to seek medical advice.
