Eye Strain: When to Seek Help for Vision Issues - Ophthalmology

Consult a doctor about eye problems?

Hello Doctor: Due to my work, I often look at my phone and computer, as well as participate in video calls.
Recently, I have been under pressure to complete a project, which has led to increased screen time.
Yesterday, I felt a bit tired and went to bed late.
When I received a message that popped up suddenly, I experienced a brief moment of blurriness, almost like a jolt, but the message came from a software that appeared at the bottom of the screen.
I'm wondering if this could be a symptom related to my retina, or if it’s more likely due to fatigue and lack of sleep.
Last week, I had an eye exam, and the doctor said everything was fine, only noting that I have floaters and no signs of retinal tears.
The doctor advised me to be cautious if I experience flashes of light.
Could this momentary blurriness be related to the flashes the doctor mentioned? However, after a good night's sleep, I woke up today and my vision seems normal.
Since I’m not entirely clear on the situation the doctor described, I wanted to ask for clarification.
Additionally, how often should I return for follow-up appointments? The doctor didn’t specify a timeline during my last visit.
I would appreciate your advice.
Thank you!

Hello,
This situation seems more like a phenomenon caused by ciliary muscle fatigue.
Please refer to: https://bit.ly/3a85BOm.
This is not a flashing phenomenon; flashes would resemble lightning seen during a thunderstorm.
Therefore, this symptom will alleviate after resting.

You can use the 20-20-20 rule for eye care: every 20 minutes of computer use, look away from the screen for 20 seconds and focus on an object 20 feet (6 meters) away.
If you can blink 20 times during this break, that would be even better.

As for retinal follow-up, if there are no specific symptoms, an annual check-up is sufficient.

I hope to have the opportunity to serve you.

More Info

Hello! It sounds like you are experiencing some concerning visual symptoms, especially given your increased screen time due to work. Let’s break down your situation and provide some insights based on medical knowledge.

From your description, it seems that you are experiencing temporary visual disturbances, such as a brief moment of blurriness or a "shake" when notifications pop up on your screen. This could be related to a few factors, including eye strain, fatigue, or even a mild form of visual disturbance. Given that you have recently had an eye examination and were told that your retina appears normal, it is less likely that these symptoms are due to a serious retinal issue. However, it’s essential to be vigilant about any changes in your vision.

Eye Strain and Fatigue:
Prolonged use of digital devices can lead to a condition commonly referred to as digital eye strain or computer vision syndrome. Symptoms can include blurred vision, dry eyes, headaches, and discomfort. The fact that you mentioned feeling tired and having late nights could contribute to these symptoms. When you are fatigued, your eyes may not focus as well, leading to temporary blurriness or visual disturbances.

Flashes and Floaters:
You mentioned that your eye doctor noted the presence of floaters and advised you to monitor for flashes of light. Flashes can occur due to various reasons, including vitreous detachment, which is common and usually not serious. However, if you experience new flashes or an increase in floaters, it’s crucial to seek immediate medical attention, as these can sometimes indicate retinal issues.

When to Seek Help:
If you experience persistent visual disturbances, such as prolonged blurriness, flashes of light, or a significant increase in floaters, it’s essential to return to your eye care professional. They may recommend a follow-up examination, especially if your symptoms change or worsen. Generally, if you have been advised to return for a follow-up, it’s a good practice to do so within a few months, or sooner if symptoms arise.

Managing Eye Strain:
To alleviate eye strain, consider implementing the following strategies:
1. The 20-20-20 Rule: Every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break to look at something 20 feet away. This helps relax the eye muscles.

2. Proper Lighting: Ensure that your workspace is well-lit to reduce glare on screens.

3. Screen Positioning: Keep your screen about an arm's length away and slightly below eye level.

4. Blink Regularly: Remind yourself to blink often to keep your eyes moist.

5. Adjust Display Settings: Increase text size and contrast to reduce strain.

Conclusion:
While your recent eye examination did not reveal any significant issues, it’s essential to remain vigilant about your symptoms. If the visual disturbances persist or worsen, don’t hesitate to seek further evaluation from your eye care provider. They can provide tailored advice and determine if any additional treatment or follow-up is necessary. Remember, taking regular breaks and practicing good eye hygiene can significantly help in managing eye strain. Stay proactive about your eye health, and don’t hesitate to reach out for help when needed!
