Genital issues
Hello Doctor: I am currently 15 weeks pregnant.
A few weeks ago, I noticed small bumps on the inner side of my labia while taking a shower.
They resemble pimples but do not have anything to squeeze out, and they are completely painless and itch-free, so I didn't pay much attention to them.
Recently, I have noticed 4 or 5 more bumps in different locations on the inner labia, and they are still painless and itch-free.
I am starting to feel a bit worried.
I also have no history of sexually transmitted infections.
I kindly ask for your help in clarifying this.
Thank you! 😭

Dr. Huang Yiwen reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Hello Miss Dongdong: Your condition is likely a benign folliculitis, so there is no need to be overly concerned.
However, if you are still worried, it would be best to consult a doctor for a proper evaluation.

More Info
During pregnancy, many women experience various changes in their bodies, including the appearance of bumps or lesions in the genital area. It is understandable to feel concerned about any new growths, especially during such a sensitive time. Based on your description, it seems that you have developed small bumps on the inner labia that are painless and non-itchy. Here’s what you need to know about labial bumps during pregnancy.
Firstly, it is important to recognize that hormonal changes during pregnancy can lead to various skin changes, including the development of benign growths. These can include:
1. Sebaceous Cysts: These are small, non-painful lumps that can occur when sebaceous glands become blocked. They are generally harmless and often resolve on their own.
2. Folliculitis: This is an inflammation of hair follicles that can cause small, red bumps. It can occur due to hormonal changes or irritation from shaving or waxing.
3. Molluscum Contagiosum: This is a viral infection that can cause small, painless bumps. While it is contagious, it is generally harmless and often resolves without treatment.
4. Genital Warts: Caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), these can appear as small, painless bumps. However, you mentioned that you have no history of sexually transmitted infections, which makes this less likely.
5. Bartholin's Gland Cysts: These occur when the Bartholin’s glands, located at the vaginal opening, become blocked. They can form painless lumps and may require treatment if they become infected.
Given that the bumps you are experiencing are painless and not itchy, it is likely that they are benign. However, it is always best to consult with your healthcare provider for a proper evaluation. They may perform a physical examination and, if necessary, recommend further tests to rule out any potential issues.
In terms of treatment, if the bumps are indeed benign and not causing any discomfort, your doctor may suggest monitoring them rather than immediate intervention. If they become painful or show signs of infection (such as redness, swelling, or discharge), further treatment may be required.
It is also essential to maintain good hygiene during pregnancy, as this can help prevent infections. Wearing breathable cotton underwear, avoiding tight-fitting clothing, and practicing safe sexual practices can contribute to overall genital health.
Lastly, if you have any concerns about sexually transmitted infections or if your partner has had any recent health issues, it is crucial to discuss this with your healthcare provider. They can provide guidance on testing and any necessary precautions.
In conclusion, while the appearance of labial bumps during pregnancy can be concerning, many are benign and related to hormonal changes. Regular check-ups with your obstetrician will help ensure that both you and your baby remain healthy throughout your pregnancy. If you notice any changes in the bumps or experience any new symptoms, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for advice and reassurance.
