Itching in the pubic area?
In recent days, I've been experiencing itching in the pubic area.
I usually masturbate, and I've recently started engaging in sexual activity, although penetration was not complete.
After that encounter, it seems I may have caused some skin irritation due to dryness.
Is it possible that the broken skin is infected and causing the itching? Currently, my vulva is slightly red, and it doesn't appear to have any pubic lice.
When I scratch, I notice small white flakes that resemble dandruff.
Should I go to a hospital for this, or should I let it heal on its own?

Dear Rou,
If you maintain proper hygiene and enhance the moisturizing of the perineal skin, avoid using panty liners regularly, keep the perineal area dry, and refrain from wearing tight or non-breathable underwear, but still experience redness, swelling, itching, and white flakes, it is advisable to consult a gynecologist.

More Info
Itchy pubic areas can be caused by a variety of factors, and it’s important to understand the potential causes, symptoms, and when to seek medical help. Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing itching in the pubic area, redness, and some skin flaking, which could be indicative of several conditions.
Possible Causes
1. Irritation or Allergic Reaction: The skin in the pubic area can be sensitive and may react to various irritants, including soaps, lotions, or laundry detergents. If you have recently changed any products, this could be a potential cause.
2. Skin Conditions: Conditions such as eczema or psoriasis can lead to itchy, red patches on the skin. The presence of white flakes could suggest a condition like seborrheic dermatitis, which is similar to dandruff but occurs in other areas of the body.
3. Infections: If there is broken skin due to dryness or friction, it can become susceptible to infections. Fungal infections, such as jock itch (tinea cruris), can cause itching and redness in the groin area. Bacterial infections can also occur, especially if there is a break in the skin.
4. Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): Certain STIs can cause itching and irritation in the genital area. If you have had unprotected sexual contact, it may be wise to consider this possibility.
5. Pubic Lice (Crabs): While you mentioned that you do not see any lice, it’s worth noting that pubic lice can cause intense itching and may leave behind small white eggs (nits) that resemble dandruff.
Symptoms to Monitor
- Itching: Persistent itching can be a sign of irritation or infection.
- Redness: If the area is red and inflamed, it may indicate an infection or dermatitis.
- Flaking Skin: The presence of white flakes could suggest a fungal infection or skin condition.
- Discharge: Any unusual discharge from the genital area should be evaluated by a healthcare provider.
- Pain or Discomfort: If you experience pain during urination or sexual activity, this could indicate an infection.
When to Seek Medical Help
It is advisable to seek medical attention if:
- The itching persists for more than a few days without improvement.
- You notice any discharge, especially if it has an unusual color or odor.
- The redness and irritation worsen or spread.
- You experience pain during urination or sexual activity.
- You have any concerns about potential STIs.
Recommendations
Given your symptoms of itching, redness, and skin flaking, it would be prudent to consult a healthcare provider. A doctor can perform a physical examination and may conduct tests to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms. They can also provide appropriate treatment, which may include topical antifungal or antibacterial medications, or recommendations for managing skin irritation.
In the meantime, consider the following self-care measures:
- Avoid Irritants: Use mild, unscented soaps and avoid products that may irritate the skin.
- Keep the Area Dry: Moisture can exacerbate fungal infections, so keeping the area dry is important.
- Wear Loose Clothing: Tight clothing can cause friction and irritation, so opt for loose-fitting garments.
- Avoid Scratching: Scratching can worsen irritation and lead to infection.
In conclusion, while some cases of itching in the pubic area may resolve on their own, it’s essential to monitor your symptoms closely and seek medical advice if they persist or worsen. Early intervention can help prevent complications and ensure proper treatment.
