Anal itching and genital itching?

Doctor: Hello! I have been experiencing anal itching for quite some time.
I have been hesitant to seek medical attention due to embarrassment, but I have researched various methods to alleviate the itching and possible causes online.
I have initially ruled out causes such as pinworms or roundworms.
Initially, the itching was localized to the anal area (and not just the anus, but also the groin area), but now my genital area is often unbearably itchy, especially at night when trying to sleep.
The itching has worsened recently, and I have been unable to sleep well for several weeks.
I understand that I need to see a colorectal surgeon for the anal itching, but should I see a gynecologist separately for the genital itching? Additionally, since I am currently on my menstrual period, can I still see the colorectal surgeon, or would it be better to wait until after my period? Thank you!

There are many causes of anal itching, including atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, scabies, pubic lice, lichen planus, xerosis, psoriasis, and seborrheic dermatitis.
Some are associated with systemic diseases such as hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, chronic renal failure, iron deficiency anemia, obstructive biliary disease, and HIV.
Lymphoma may also be a concern.
It is advisable to seek evaluation and treatment from a dermatologist, preferably after the menstrual period.

Anal and genital itching can be uncomfortable and distressing, and it's important to understand when to seek medical help. Based on your description, it seems that you have been experiencing persistent itching not only in the anal area but also in the groin and genital regions. This condition can be caused by a variety of factors, including infections, skin irritations, allergies, or even underlying medical conditions.

Firstly, it is commendable that you have taken the initiative to research potential causes and remedies for your symptoms. However, self-diagnosis can often lead to misunderstandings, and it is crucial to consult a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Given that you have already ruled out common causes such as pinworms or roundworms, there are still several other possibilities to consider.

Common causes of anal and genital itching include:
1. Fungal Infections: Conditions like candidiasis (yeast infections) can lead to intense itching in the genital area. These infections are often accompanied by other symptoms such as discharge or irritation.

2. Bacterial Infections: Bacterial vaginosis or other bacterial infections can also cause itching and discomfort in the genital area.

3. Skin Conditions: Dermatitis, eczema, or psoriasis can affect the anal and genital regions, leading to itching and irritation.

4. Hygiene Issues: Both inadequate and excessive hygiene can lead to irritation. It's essential to maintain a balanced routine.

5. Allergic Reactions: Reactions to soaps, detergents, or personal care products can cause localized itching.

6. Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): Some STIs can present with itching as a symptom, so it is important to consider this possibility.

Regarding your question about whether to see a colorectal surgeon for anal itching and a gynecologist for genital itching, it is advisable to consult both specialists. They can provide a comprehensive evaluation of your symptoms and help identify the underlying cause. You do not necessarily need to wait until your menstrual period is over to seek medical attention. However, it is important to inform your healthcare provider about your menstrual status, as it may affect certain examinations or tests.

If your symptoms have been persistent for several weeks and are affecting your sleep and quality of life, it is important to seek medical help sooner rather than later. Delaying treatment could lead to worsening symptoms or complications.

In summary, while it can be embarrassing to discuss issues related to anal and genital itching, it is crucial to prioritize your health. Consulting with both a colorectal surgeon and a gynecologist will provide you with a thorough assessment and appropriate treatment options. Remember, healthcare professionals are trained to handle such issues with sensitivity and confidentiality, so do not hesitate to reach out for help.
