Itchy Genital Area: When to Seek Medical Attention - Obstetrics and Gynecology

Genital itching

I have been experiencing persistent itching in my genital area for the past few days.
Four days ago, I felt a slight stinging sensation while urinating, but it went away the next day.
Four days ago, I noticed some blood when I wiped after urination, but that also resolved the following day.
Today, I noticed blood again when wiping.
My discharge appears normal, but I sometimes feel pain in my lower abdomen while riding a motorcycle.
In the past few days, I have been wearing looser-fitting pants and drinking more water to increase urination.
Should I seek medical attention, or is this likely to resolve on its own?

Qiu, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2023/01/13

Dr. Chen Zhiyu reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello! It is advisable to seek medical examination for abnormal bleeding outside of menstruation and lower abdominal pain.
Thank you!

When it comes to experiencing an itchy genital area, especially accompanied by symptoms such as blood in the urine, pain during urination, and lower abdominal discomfort, it is crucial to take these signs seriously and seek medical attention promptly.
The symptoms you describe could be indicative of several conditions, some of which may require immediate intervention. The presence of blood in your urine (hematuria) is particularly concerning, as it can be a sign of various underlying issues, including urinary tract infections (UTIs), kidney stones, or even more serious conditions such as bladder or kidney cancer. While the initial episode of blood in the urine may have resolved, the recurrence of this symptom suggests that there may be an ongoing issue that needs to be addressed.

Itching in the genital area can be caused by a variety of factors, including infections (such as yeast infections or sexually transmitted infections), irritations from soaps or hygiene products, or skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis. The fact that you experienced a brief episode of pain during urination could also point towards a UTI, which is often accompanied by symptoms such as urgency, frequency, and discomfort.

Given that you have already experienced blood in your urine on multiple occasions, it is advisable to consult a healthcare provider. They may perform a urinalysis to check for signs of infection, blood, or other abnormalities. Depending on the findings, further tests such as imaging studies (like an ultrasound or CT scan) may be warranted to rule out structural issues in the urinary tract.

In addition to seeking medical attention, there are some self-care measures you can take in the meantime. Wearing breathable, cotton underwear and avoiding irritants such as scented soaps or lotions can help alleviate itching. Staying well-hydrated and urinating frequently can also help flush out any potential irritants or infections from your urinary tract.

In summary, while some mild cases of itching or discomfort may resolve on their own, the combination of your symptoms—especially the recurrent blood in your urine—warrants a thorough evaluation by a healthcare professional. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent complications and ensure that any serious conditions are addressed promptly. Do not hesitate to reach out to your doctor or visit a clinic to discuss your symptoms and receive appropriate care.
