Medication Side Effects: Sleep Disruptions and Fatigue - Pharmacology

Drug side effects

I am 176 cm tall and weigh 64 kg.
Three weeks ago, I visited a doctor due to experiencing palpitations and a pulsating sensation in my abdomen.
The doctor prescribed me Concor 1.25 mg, Tunin tablets, and Faramet coated tablets.
After starting the medication, I often had vivid dreams during the first two weeks, but I was able to sleep for 8 hours.
Recently, however, I have been waking up after less than four hours of sleep and find it difficult to fall back asleep.
I also feel noticeably fatigued at work.
Could this be related to the side effects of the medication?

Dr. Zheng Shuwen reply Pharmacology

Hello, regarding your question, here is my response: According to the literature, the medication you are currently taking, Kankun 1.25, may potentially cause fatigue as a side effect.
However, it is also possible that your recent work stress is contributing to your insomnia.
You might consider finding a way to relieve stress, such as exercising or listening to relaxing music.
If you feel unwell, please return for a consultation with your physician.
Wishing you all the best.

Understanding medication side effects, especially in relation to sleep disruptions and fatigue, is crucial for managing your health effectively. Based on your description, it seems that the medications you are taking—康肯 (Kankin), 吐寧 (Tuning), and 發碼膜衣錠 (Fama Film Coated Tablets)—may indeed be contributing to your sleep disturbances and daytime fatigue.

Firstly, let's discuss the potential side effects of these medications. Kankin, which is often prescribed for anxiety or related conditions, can have side effects that include drowsiness, dizziness, and disturbances in sleep patterns. Similarly, Tuning, which is typically used for nausea or vomiting, can also lead to sedation and fatigue. Lastly, Fama Film Coated Tablets, depending on their active ingredients, may have their own set of side effects, including potential impacts on sleep quality.

The fact that you experienced vivid dreams during the first two weeks of treatment could indicate that your sleep architecture was altered by the medications. Medications can affect the different stages of sleep, particularly REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep, which is when most dreaming occurs. While dreaming can be a sign of healthy REM sleep, frequent awakenings and difficulty returning to sleep, as you described, suggest that your overall sleep quality may have deteriorated.

The recent change in your sleep pattern—specifically, waking up after only four hours and struggling to fall back asleep—could be a direct result of the medications. Many psychotropic drugs can lead to a phenomenon known as "sleep fragmentation," where the sleep cycle is disrupted, leading to shorter sleep durations and increased awakenings throughout the night. This can leave you feeling unrefreshed and fatigued during the day, which aligns with your experience of noticeable tiredness at work.

Moreover, the interaction of these medications can exacerbate side effects. For example, if both Kankin and Tuning have sedative properties, taking them together may amplify feelings of drowsiness and fatigue. This is particularly concerning if you are required to perform tasks that demand alertness, such as driving or operating machinery.

It’s also important to consider other factors that may contribute to your sleep issues. Stress, anxiety, and lifestyle choices (such as caffeine intake or screen time before bed) can all impact sleep quality. Given that you mentioned feeling fatigued at work, it might be beneficial to evaluate your overall stress levels and daily habits.

In light of these considerations, it is advisable to consult with your healthcare provider about your current medication regimen. They may suggest adjusting the dosages, switching to alternative medications with fewer sedative effects, or implementing non-pharmacological strategies to improve your sleep quality. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) is one effective approach that focuses on changing sleep habits and misconceptions about sleep.

In summary, the sleep disruptions and fatigue you are experiencing could very well be linked to the medications you are taking. It’s essential to have an open dialogue with your healthcare provider to explore these side effects and find a suitable solution that enhances your sleep quality and overall well-being. Remember, managing medication side effects is a critical aspect of treatment, and your comfort and health should always be a priority.
