Discontinuation of medication?
Hello, Doctor.
I have been taking Yuzi for about two to three years, but after finishing a pack last month, my period did not come.
I continued taking three pills from a new pack, but still no period.
I went to see a doctor and confirmed that I am not pregnant.
The doctor also advised me to stop the medication to allow my period to come before switching to Qilian.
I have stopped for two days now.
I would like to ask the doctor if there is a possibility of getting pregnant if I have sexual intercourse during the time I am off the medication until my period arrives.
Thank you.
Annie, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2020/08/20

When considering the question of whether you can get pregnant after stopping Yaz (a combination oral contraceptive), it's essential to understand how hormonal birth control works and the implications of stopping it.
Yaz contains hormones that prevent ovulation, thicken cervical mucus, and thin the uterine lining. When you take Yaz consistently, it effectively suppresses your natural hormonal cycle. However, once you stop taking the pill, your body begins to adjust back to its natural hormonal rhythm, which can take some time.
In your case, you mentioned that you stopped taking Yaz after completing a pack and that your period did not arrive as expected. This is not uncommon, as hormonal contraceptives can sometimes cause a delay in the return of your menstrual cycle. After stopping Yaz, it is possible for ovulation to occur before your first period returns, which means that if you engage in unprotected sexual intercourse during this time, there is a possibility of becoming pregnant.
Typically, ovulation can occur as soon as a few days to a couple of weeks after stopping the pill, depending on how your body responds. Therefore, if you have unprotected sex during this time, there is a risk of pregnancy, even if you have not yet had a withdrawal bleed (the period that occurs after stopping the pill).
Regarding your doctor's advice to stop Yaz to allow your menstrual cycle to return, this is a common recommendation. It is often suggested to wait for at least one full cycle after stopping hormonal birth control before trying to conceive, as this allows your body to regulate its hormones and can help in predicting ovulation more accurately. However, many women do conceive shortly after stopping the pill, sometimes even before their first natural period.
If you are actively trying to conceive, it may be beneficial to track your ovulation signs, such as changes in cervical mucus or using ovulation predictor kits. This can help you identify your fertile window and increase your chances of conception.
In summary, yes, it is possible to get pregnant after stopping Yaz, even before your period returns. If you are trying to conceive, it is advisable to monitor your cycle and ovulation signs closely. If you have any concerns or experience irregularities in your menstrual cycle after stopping the pill, it is always best to consult with your healthcare provider for personalized advice and guidance. They can provide you with more information on what to expect after discontinuing Yaz and help you plan for a healthy pregnancy when you are ready.
