Color of the glans penis
Hello doctor, I usually maintain good hygiene by regularly cleaning my glans, but recently I noticed that the skin on both sides of the urethra of the glans appears to have a white, membrane-like texture, and occasionally the surface looks wrinkled.
Aside from this, I have no other symptoms.
Could you please advise me on what this condition might be? Thank you!

Hello: If there has been sexual activity, there is a possibility of infection.
If there has been no sexual activity, it may be due to insufficient dryness of the foreskin, leading to the formation of smegma.
There is no need for excessive cleaning; simply rinse with water and ensure it is dried properly.
After urination, avoid remaining damp.
Wishing you good health.

The appearance of a white membrane on the glans (the head of the penis) can be concerning, especially for someone who practices good hygiene. There are several potential causes for this condition, and understanding them can help in determining the appropriate course of action.
1. Balanitis: This is an inflammation of the glans, often caused by poor hygiene, irritants, or infections. Symptoms can include redness, swelling, and a white discharge or membrane. Even with regular washing, if the area is not dried properly or if there is an irritant present (like soap or lotion), it can lead to balanitis.
2. Lichen Sclerosus: This is a chronic skin condition that can affect the genital area, leading to white patches and changes in skin texture. It is more common in men who are uncircumcised, but it can occur in circumcised men as well. This condition may require medical treatment to manage symptoms and prevent complications.
3. Yeast Infection: A yeast infection, often caused by Candida species, can lead to a white, cottage cheese-like discharge and irritation. This is more common in individuals with diabetes or those who are immunocompromised. Symptoms typically include itching and discomfort, although some may not experience these symptoms.
4. Pearly Penile Papules: These are small, benign bumps that can appear around the glans and are often mistaken for a pathological condition. They are normal anatomical variations and do not require treatment.
5. Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): Certain STIs can cause changes in the appearance of the genital area, including white patches or membranes. If there is any chance of exposure to STIs, it is important to get tested.
6. Psoriasis or Eczema: These skin conditions can also affect the genital area, leading to white patches and irritation. They are often associated with other symptoms like itching or scaling.
Given that you have not experienced any additional symptoms such as pain, itching, or discharge, it may be less likely to be an infection. However, the presence of a white membrane is still a sign that something may be amiss, and it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough examination. They may perform a physical examination and, if necessary, take a sample for further testing to determine the exact cause.
In the meantime, continue to maintain good hygiene by gently washing the area with mild soap and water, and ensure it is thoroughly dried afterward. Avoid using any harsh soaps, lotions, or other products that may irritate the skin.
If the condition persists or worsens, or if you develop additional symptoms such as pain, discharge, or changes in urination, seek medical attention promptly. Early diagnosis and treatment can help prevent complications and ensure your overall health and well-being.
