A white membrane on the glans?
Hello doctor, I would like to ask about a white membrane on the glans.
I consider myself a heavy masturbator, doing it once or twice a day.
Recently, I noticed that a white membrane has developed on the glans, starting off small and eventually spreading to cover the entire glans, while some areas remain red.
Most of the glans is covered by this white membrane, and I have also noticed a significant decrease in sensitivity; I do not feel any stimulation when lightly touching the glans.
The duration of my masturbation sessions has also increased considerably.
I would like to know if this could be a case of glans keratinization, or if there might be another condition or nerve damage involved.
I wash the glans thoroughly every day, but the white membrane does not come off at all, and I want to restore my original sensitivity.

Dr. Du Shixi reply Urology
Hello: If you are using lubricants or ointments, please discontinue their use, as the skin on the glans is very delicate.
There is no need to wash the glans frequently; rinsing with clean water is sufficient.
Just keep the area dry and well-ventilated.
As for the membrane you mentioned that cannot be removed, it may be a change in the skin, and it may not necessarily return to its original state.
It is best to just observe for now.
Wishing you good health.

The presence of a white membrane on the glans (the head of the penis) can be concerning and may indicate several underlying conditions. Based on your description, it seems that you are experiencing a significant change in the appearance of the glans, along with a decrease in sensitivity. Let's explore the possible causes and solutions for this condition.
Possible Causes
1. Balanitis: This is an inflammation of the glans, often caused by infections (bacterial or fungal), irritants, or poor hygiene. Balanitis can lead to the formation of a white, sometimes painful membrane on the glans. Symptoms may include redness, swelling, and discomfort.
2. Lichen Sclerosus: This is a chronic skin condition that can affect the genital area, leading to white patches and changes in skin texture. It can cause itching and discomfort and may lead to scarring if untreated.
3. Keratolysis: This condition involves the thickening of the skin (hyperkeratosis) on the glans, which can appear as a white membrane. It may be associated with friction or irritation, particularly in individuals who engage in frequent masturbation.
4. Fungal Infections: Conditions like candidiasis (yeast infection) can cause a white coating on the glans. This is often accompanied by itching and irritation.
5. Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): Certain STIs can also cause changes in the appearance of the glans, including the formation of lesions or membranes.
6. Decreased Sensitivity: The loss of sensitivity you are experiencing could be due to a variety of factors, including nerve damage from excessive friction or irritation, or it could be a psychological response to changes in your sexual function.
Solutions and Recommendations
1. Consult a Healthcare Provider: The first and most important step is to consult a healthcare professional, preferably a urologist or dermatologist. They can perform a physical examination and may recommend tests to determine the exact cause of the white membrane.
2. Avoid Irritants: If you suspect that your masturbation habits are contributing to the problem, consider reducing the frequency and using lubrication to minimize friction. This can help prevent further irritation.
3. Maintain Hygiene: While you mentioned that you wash the glans daily, ensure that you are using a mild, unscented soap and that you rinse thoroughly. Avoid harsh soaps or products that may irritate the sensitive skin.
4. Topical Treatments: Depending on the diagnosis, your doctor may prescribe topical antifungal creams, corticosteroids, or other medications to reduce inflammation and treat any infections.
5. Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of any changes in your symptoms, including the appearance of the membrane, sensitivity levels, and any discomfort. This information can be helpful for your healthcare provider.
6. Consider Psychological Factors: If you find that anxiety or stress is affecting your sexual health, consider speaking with a mental health professional. They can help address any psychological factors that may be contributing to your concerns.
7. Avoid Self-Diagnosis: While it’s tempting to search for answers online, self-diagnosing can lead to unnecessary worry or inappropriate treatments. Always seek professional advice for medical concerns.
In conclusion, the white membrane on the glans and decreased sensitivity are symptoms that warrant further investigation. A healthcare provider can help determine the underlying cause and recommend appropriate treatment options. Taking proactive steps to maintain genital health and seeking professional guidance will be key to resolving your concerns.
