Uneven Botox Results: Why Is One Side of My Face Still Hard? - Plastic Surgery

Botulinum toxin for facial slimming issues?

Hello Doctor, I would like to ask a question.
On August 21, I received six Botox injections on each side of my face for jawline slimming.
However, even now, when I clench my jaw tightly, the muscle on the left side still feels firm and protrudes, while the right side has relaxed.
Is it possible for the muscles on both sides to relax at different rates? Why is it that the muscle on the right side has relaxed while the left side remains firm? Thank you for your response, Doctor!

Dr. Lü Mingchuan reply Plastic Surgery

Hello: It is possible that the injection did not reach the muscle on the left side, or that there is more muscle mass on the left side.
It is recommended to receive a booster shot at the Changhua Hospital of the Ministry of Health and Welfare.
We care about you.

When it comes to cosmetic procedures like Botox injections, it's not uncommon for patients to experience uneven results, particularly when it involves muscle relaxation in the face. In your case, it appears that you received Botox injections on both sides of your face to achieve a slimmer appearance, but you are noticing that the left side remains firm while the right side has relaxed. This situation can be attributed to several factors.

Firstly, it's important to understand that Botox works by blocking the signals from the nerves to the muscles, preventing the muscles from contracting. However, the effects of Botox can vary from person to person due to individual differences in anatomy, muscle strength, and even the way the body metabolizes the toxin. Some people may have stronger muscle contractions on one side of the face, which can lead to uneven results if the Botox does not fully take effect on that side.

Another factor to consider is the technique used during the injection. If the Botox was not evenly distributed or if the dosage differed slightly between the two sides, this could lead to one side relaxing more than the other. Additionally, the injection depth and the specific muscles targeted can also play a role in how effectively the Botox works. If the left side's muscles were injected at a different depth or angle, it might not respond as well as the right side.

Moreover, the timing of the Botox effects can vary. Typically, Botox starts to take effect within 24 to 72 hours after injection, with full results visible after about two weeks. However, some individuals may experience a delayed response or uneven onset of effects, where one side may take longer to relax than the other. This can be particularly true if there is any swelling or bruising at the injection site, which might temporarily affect muscle function.

If you are concerned about the uneven results, it is advisable to follow up with the medical professional who performed the injections. They can assess the situation and determine whether additional treatment is necessary. In some cases, a touch-up injection may be recommended to balance the effects on both sides of the face.
It's also worth noting that while Botox is generally safe, there can be side effects, including localized pain, swelling, or even asymmetry in facial expressions. If you experience any unusual symptoms, such as persistent pain or changes in sensation, it is crucial to seek medical advice promptly.

In conclusion, uneven Botox results can occur due to various factors, including individual muscle strength, injection technique, and the body's response to the toxin. If you have concerns about the firmness of the left side of your face, consulting with your injector is the best course of action. They can provide personalized advice and determine the best way to achieve the desired results. Remember, communication with your healthcare provider is key to addressing any concerns you may have regarding cosmetic procedures.
