My right face is more swollen?
I like to use two mirrors to look at my profile when I have some free time.
Every time I look at my left side, I think I look quite handsome! (Really! ^^) It seems that aside from a few pimples, there are no major issues.
However, when I gradually move the mirrors to the right side, I feel that my right side looks strange! I initially thought it was due to the pimples (which are more severe on my right side), so I asked the dermatologist who treats my acne.
But he said it’s not an issue related to the pimples.
As for what the problem is...
he couldn’t say for sure...
T_T I don’t think my facial structure is misaligned; it seems to be a matter of “soft tissue.” How can I describe it? Well...
my right side appears larger and longer.
Mathematically speaking, it has a “larger surface area.” Also, the corner of my mouth on the right side droops more than on the left.
My eyes...
should be symmetrical...
Doctor! Please help me! Q_Q (P.S.
I used to weigh 87 kg over a year ago due to a breakup, and I kept eating...
my face also became “puffy,” but then I quickly returned to a normal weight of 65-70 kg.
I’m wondering if that could be why one side of my face looks puffy?)

Dr. Jiang Baicong reply Plastic Surgery
Hello, Ayou: If the skeleton is symmetrical and the framework is not misaligned, but the right side of the face is also "swollen" and the right corner of the mouth is drooping more than the left, this is essentially a condition related to soft tissues! Generally, it is normal for individuals to have slight asymmetries on both sides.
If it is not severe, please rest assured and do not worry! Issues with soft tissues on the face can involve differences in muscles, skin, fat, and fascia.
I recommend you visit the plastic surgery outpatient department at the hospital for evaluation.
Wishing you health and happiness! Jiang Baicong

More Info
Facial asymmetry is a common concern for many individuals, and it can be influenced by a variety of factors, including genetics, weight fluctuations, and even lifestyle choices. In your case, you’ve observed that your right cheek appears swollen or larger than your left, and you’ve also noted that this asymmetry seems to be more pronounced when you look in the mirror. Let’s delve into some potential reasons for this phenomenon and what you can do about it.
Possible Causes of Facial Asymmetry
1. Genetics: Many people naturally have some degree of facial asymmetry. This can be due to the way bones and soft tissues develop. If your family members also exhibit similar asymmetries, it may simply be a genetic trait.
2. Weight Fluctuations: You mentioned experiencing significant weight changes over a short period. Rapid weight loss can lead to changes in facial fat distribution. When you were at your higher weight, your face may have appeared fuller, and as you lost weight, the fat loss might not have been uniform across both sides of your face, leading to the appearance of asymmetry.
3. Muscle Tone and Usage: The muscles on one side of your face may be more developed or used more frequently than those on the other side. This can happen due to habitual facial expressions, such as favoring one side when smiling or chewing. Over time, this can lead to noticeable differences in the appearance of your cheeks.
4. Skin Conditions: While you mentioned that your acne is more pronounced on the right side, it’s important to note that inflammation or swelling from skin conditions can also contribute to the appearance of asymmetry. If your right cheek is more affected by acne, it may appear larger or more swollen due to inflammation.
5. Dental Issues: Sometimes, dental problems can lead to facial asymmetry. If you have any dental misalignments or issues with your jaw, it could affect how your face looks. An uneven bite can cause one side of your face to appear different from the other.
6. Medical Conditions: In some cases, underlying medical conditions can lead to facial asymmetry. Conditions such as Bell's palsy, which affects facial muscles, or other neurological issues can cause one side of the face to droop or appear different. However, if you have been evaluated by a healthcare professional and no such conditions were found, this may not be a concern for you.
What You Can Do
- Consult a Specialist: If your concerns about facial asymmetry persist, consider consulting with a dermatologist or a plastic surgeon who specializes in facial aesthetics. They can provide a thorough evaluation and discuss potential treatments if necessary.
- Facial Exercises: Some people find that facial exercises can help improve muscle tone and symmetry. These exercises can strengthen the muscles on the weaker side of your face, potentially improving the overall appearance.
- Skincare: If acne is a concern, maintaining a good skincare routine can help reduce breakouts and inflammation. Consult with a dermatologist for personalized advice on managing acne.
- Weight Management: If weight fluctuations are a concern, maintaining a stable, healthy weight can help your face appear more symmetrical over time.
- Self-Acceptance: Lastly, it’s important to remember that everyone has some degree of asymmetry, and it’s a natural part of being human. Embracing your unique features can often lead to greater self-confidence.
In conclusion, while facial asymmetry can be concerning, it is often a normal variation. If you feel that it significantly impacts your self-esteem or quality of life, seeking professional advice is a good step forward. Remember, beauty comes in many forms, and your unique features contribute to who you are.
