Swelling and numbness on the left side of the mouth (cheek area)?

Hello Doctor, I woke up in the middle of the night to find that the left side of my face, particularly the cheek area, is swollen and numb, accompanied by a slight tingling sensation.
The swelling is clearly visible in the mirror, causing asymmetry in my face.
The center of the swelling is a bit itchy, but there are no obvious external injuries on the cheek or inside the mouth.
I would like to ask the doctor what this condition might be and which specialty I should consult.
Thank you, Doctor!

Swelling and numbness in the left cheek, accompanied by a tingling sensation, can be concerning symptoms that may arise from various underlying conditions. Given your description, it is essential to consider several potential causes and the appropriate specialists to consult for further evaluation.

Possible Causes
1. Allergic Reaction: One of the most common causes of localized swelling and numbness in the face is an allergic reaction. This could be due to food, medication, insect bites, or contact with allergens. If you have recently consumed something new or been exposed to potential allergens, this could be a plausible explanation.

2. Infection: Infections, particularly dental infections or sinusitis, can lead to swelling in the facial area. If there is an underlying dental issue, such as an abscessed tooth, it could cause localized swelling and discomfort.

3. Nerve Compression or Damage: Conditions affecting the facial nerves, such as Bell's palsy or trigeminal neuralgia, can lead to symptoms of numbness and swelling. Bell's palsy, in particular, can cause sudden weakness or paralysis on one side of the face, often accompanied by pain or discomfort.

4. Angioedema: This is a more severe form of swelling that can occur in response to allergens or medications. It can affect deeper layers of the skin and may require immediate medical attention, especially if it affects breathing.

5. Vascular Issues: Conditions such as a transient ischemic attack (TIA) or stroke can present with sudden facial swelling, numbness, or weakness. While these are less common, they are critical to rule out, especially if you have risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, or a history of cardiovascular disease.

Recommended Specialists
Given the range of potential causes, it would be prudent to consult with the following specialists:
1. Primary Care Physician (PCP): Your first step should be to see your primary care physician. They can perform an initial assessment, take your medical history, and conduct a physical examination to determine the most likely cause of your symptoms.

2. Allergist: If an allergic reaction is suspected, an allergist can perform tests to identify specific allergens and recommend appropriate treatment.

3. Dentist: If there is a possibility of a dental infection, a visit to the dentist is warranted. They can evaluate for any dental issues that may be contributing to the swelling.

4. Neurologist: If nerve involvement is suspected, particularly if you experience additional neurological symptoms, a neurologist can conduct further evaluations, including imaging studies or nerve conduction tests.

5. Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) Specialist: If sinus issues or other ENT-related problems are suspected, an ENT specialist can provide a thorough examination and treatment options.

Conclusion
In summary, the swelling and numbness in your left cheek could stem from various causes, including allergic reactions, infections, nerve issues, or vascular problems. It is crucial to seek medical attention promptly to determine the underlying cause and receive appropriate treatment. Start with your primary care physician, who can guide you to the right specialist based on their findings. Early intervention is key to managing any potential complications effectively.
