Do Eye Massages and Crying Affect Your Retina Health? - Ophthalmology

Retinal issues?

Hello Doctor: Thank you for your quick response to my previous question; I truly appreciate it.
I have two more questions to ask you: 1.
Recently, I applied some pressure on my nasal bridge, between my eyebrows, and around my eye sockets to relieve fatigue, without pressing on the eyeball.
Does this type of massage affect the retina? 2.
I found information online stating that crying too hard can lead to retinal tears.
Is it true that crying can impact the retina? Thank you again, Doctor.
I recently had retinal laser surgery and just had a follow-up appointment less than a month ago, but I am considering another visit (there have been no changes since the laser treatment; I just want to reassure myself and hope to quickly overcome my anxiety).
😭🙏

Dr. Gao Pilin reply Ophthalmology

Dear Anxiety Research Graduate,
1.
It is unlikely.
2.
Normal crying should not cause a retinal tear, unless there is shaking of the eyeball during crying, such as when wiping tears puts pressure on the eyeball, or if there is a sudden impact to the eye due to emotional distress.

The ophthalmology department at Puzi Hospital in Taiwan is open on:
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM
Wednesday from 2:00 PM to 4:30 PM
Please note that online responses are for reference only; it is essential to seek medical attention at a healthcare facility if necessary.
I hope to have the opportunity to assist you.
Sincerely,
Gao Pilin

Thank you for your questions regarding eye health, particularly in relation to eye massages and crying. These are important topics, especially for individuals who have undergone procedures like retinal laser surgery.

1. Eye Massages and Their Impact on Retina Health: Gentle pressure applied around the eyes, such as on the bridge of the nose, between the eyebrows, and around the eye sockets, is generally safe and should not adversely affect the retina. The retina is located at the back of the eye and is protected by the eye's structure. However, it is crucial to avoid applying direct pressure to the eyeball itself, as this could potentially lead to complications, especially in individuals with pre-existing conditions or after surgical procedures. If you are feeling fatigued, it is advisable to take breaks from screens and engage in eye exercises that promote relaxation without putting pressure on the eyes.
2. Crying and Its Effects on the Retina: The concern about crying leading to retinal issues, such as retinal tears or detachment, is somewhat overstated. While excessive crying can lead to temporary discomfort, such as eye strain or dryness, it is unlikely to cause direct harm to the retina in a healthy individual. The act of crying itself does not exert enough pressure to cause retinal damage. However, if someone has underlying conditions, such as high myopia or previous retinal issues, they may be at a higher risk for retinal complications. It is essential to be aware of your eye health and consult with an eye care professional if you experience any unusual symptoms, especially after significant emotional episodes.

In your case, since you have recently undergone retinal laser surgery, it is understandable that you may feel anxious about your eye health. It is always a good idea to follow up with your ophthalmologist if you have concerns, especially after a surgical procedure. Regular check-ups can provide peace of mind and ensure that your eyes are healing properly.

In addition to the above points, here are some general tips for maintaining eye health:
- Stay Hydrated: Proper hydration is essential for overall eye health. Dehydration can lead to dry eyes, which can exacerbate discomfort.

- Use Artificial Tears: If you experience dryness, consider using preservative-free artificial tears to keep your eyes lubricated.

- Limit Screen Time: Follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds to reduce eye strain.

- Wear Sunglasses: Protect your eyes from UV rays when outdoors, as prolonged exposure can lead to various eye issues.

- Healthy Diet: Incorporate foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins C and E, and zinc to support eye health.

In conclusion, while gentle massages around the eyes are generally safe, direct pressure on the eyeball should be avoided. Crying, while it may cause temporary discomfort, is unlikely to harm the retina in healthy individuals. If you have any concerns, especially following surgery, do not hesitate to reach out to your eye care provider for reassurance and guidance. Your eye health is paramount, and staying proactive about it is the best approach.
