Cervical lymphatic issues

Hello doctor, I recently felt some swelling in my neck lymph nodes, so I went to the clinic.
The doctor examined my neck and collarbone and said everything was normal.
However, I mentioned that when I palpated firmly, I could feel some hard, oval-shaped structures.
The doctor told me that some lymph nodes can be more easily palpable.
I would like to ask if the doctor might have made a mistake in his examination.
Also, are there certain lymph nodes that are more easily felt? Lastly, I have to apply pressure to feel these hard structures; is that normal? I tend to worry about having serious illnesses...
I hope you can answer my questions.
Thank you!

Chen, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2020/09/06

Dr. Zheng Jueyi reply Otolaryngology

Hello, the neck is naturally filled with many small lymph nodes.
If the physician's examination shows no issues, you can observe yourself for now.
However, if the lymph nodes become larger, persistently painful, or exceed one centimeter, you should seek medical attention for further evaluation.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely, Dr.
Cheng Jue-Yi, Director of the Department of Otolaryngology, Taoyuan General Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare.

When it comes to lymph nodes, understanding their characteristics and when to seek medical advice can be crucial for your peace of mind and health. Lymph nodes are small, bean-shaped structures that are part of the lymphatic system, which plays a vital role in your immune response. They can become palpable (able to be felt) for various reasons, including infections, inflammation, or malignancies.
In your case, you mentioned that you felt some hard, oval-shaped structures in your neck and that your doctor examined you and deemed everything normal. It’s important to note that lymph nodes can vary in size and consistency. Some lymph nodes are more superficial and can be easily palpated, especially in areas like the neck, armpits, and groin. It is not uncommon for individuals to have lymph nodes that are more prominent or easier to feel due to their anatomical location or individual body composition.

Your doctor’s assessment is significant, especially if they have palpated the lymph nodes and found them to be normal in size and consistency. Lymph nodes that are considered normal typically have a soft, mobile, and non-tender feel. If the nodes are hard, fixed, or tender, that could warrant further investigation. However, it’s also essential to consider that some lymph nodes may feel firmer than others due to various benign reasons, such as reactive hyperplasia, which is a common response to infection or inflammation.

Regarding your concern about whether your doctor might have missed something, it’s important to trust their expertise. Doctors are trained to assess lymph nodes and can often distinguish between normal and abnormal findings based on their size, shape, and texture. If your doctor felt that the lymph nodes were normal, it is likely that they did not exhibit characteristics that would raise concern.

If you find that you can only feel these lymph nodes when applying pressure, this may indicate that they are not enlarged or abnormal. Lymph nodes that are truly concerning are often palpable without much pressure and may be larger than 1 cm in diameter. In your case, if the lymph nodes are small and only felt when you press down, it is generally considered normal.

However, if you continue to feel anxious about your health or if you notice any changes in the size or consistency of the lymph nodes, it is always appropriate to seek a second opinion or follow up with your healthcare provider. They may recommend imaging studies, such as an ultrasound, to further evaluate the lymph nodes if necessary.
In summary, while it is normal to feel some lymph nodes, especially in the neck area, it is essential to monitor any changes. If you have persistent concerns or if the lymph nodes change in size or feel, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for further evaluation. Your health and peace of mind are paramount, and it’s always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to your health.
