Reading text with the eyes?

Hello, Doctor Gao.
Recently, when I look at text, I feel that the lines of the characters appear elongated.
However, after an eye examination, my fundus was found to be normal.
Upon refraction, it was discovered that my left and right eyes have deepened by 25 degrees, but the astigmatism in my right eye has decreased by 50 degrees.
Could this be related to my myopia and astigmatism? Additionally, when looking at the Amsler grid, I see a vertical line within the black dot.
Could this be due to visual persistence?

Hello, concerned individual: If your vision has not worsened and you are only experiencing elongated lines in the text, it may be caused by myopia and astigmatism.
You might consider wearing glasses with the correct prescription.
If you do not see any distortion in the Amsler grid, it should not be a concern.
Your phenomenon could be an illusion caused by the original vertical lines, and it likely does not indicate a problem.

Hello! Thank you for your questions regarding visual distortions, myopia, astigmatism, and the Amsler grid. It sounds like you are experiencing some interesting visual phenomena, and I’d like to provide some insights based on your description.

Firstly, the sensation of letters appearing elongated or distorted can indeed be related to refractive errors such as myopia (nearsightedness) and astigmatism. Myopia occurs when the eyeball is too long or the cornea is too curved, causing light rays to focus in front of the retina. This can lead to blurred vision for distant objects. Astigmatism, on the other hand, is caused by an irregular shape of the cornea or lens, which leads to distorted or blurred vision at all distances. The fact that your prescription has changed, with an increase in myopia and a decrease in astigmatism, suggests that your visual system is adapting to these changes.
The elongation of letters you are experiencing could be due to several factors. One possibility is that the increase in myopia is causing your eyes to focus differently, which can lead to a perception of distortion. Additionally, astigmatism can cause lines to appear wavy or stretched, particularly if the astigmatism is significant. The reduction in astigmatism in your right eye may help improve clarity, but if the left eye's myopia has increased, it could still contribute to the overall distortion you perceive.

Regarding the Amsler grid, it is a tool used to detect visual distortions, particularly in the central vision, which can be indicative of macular issues. When you mention seeing a vertical line within the black dot of the Amsler grid, this could indeed be related to a phenomenon known as visual persistence or afterimage. This occurs when the photoreceptors in your retina continue to send signals to your brain even after the stimulus has been removed. If you are focusing on a specific point for an extended period, your brain may interpret this as a continuation of the visual input, leading to the perception of lines or shapes that are not actually present.

It’s also important to consider that visual distortions can be influenced by other factors, including eye fatigue, lighting conditions, and even psychological factors such as anxiety or stress, which can heighten awareness of visual anomalies. Given your history of increased myopia and changes in astigmatism, it would be wise to continue monitoring your vision closely. Regular eye exams are crucial, especially if you notice any new or worsening symptoms.

In summary, the elongation of letters and the visual phenomena you are experiencing could be related to your refractive errors, particularly myopia and astigmatism. The Amsler grid findings may also reflect visual persistence. I recommend discussing these symptoms further with your eye care professional, who can provide tailored advice and possibly suggest additional tests to rule out any underlying conditions. Maintaining good eye health through regular check-ups and proper corrective lenses will be essential in managing these visual distortions.
If you have any more questions or concerns, feel free to reach out. Wishing you the best in your eye health journey!

Generally, close-range testing should not be conducted at a distance of 10 centimeters; a standard distance is 30 to 40 centimeters. I cannot assess any issues detected under non-standard conditions.
