Head trauma?
Hello doctor, yesterday while playing basketball, I was hit on the side of my head by another person's elbow.
The area that was struck has been experiencing mild pain for the past day or two, but I do not have symptoms such as dizziness, vomiting, or weakness.
I was able to continue playing at the time.
The next morning, I noticed some involuntary shaking in my fingers, but it was brief and has since stopped.
I have been applying ice continuously.
Should I just monitor my condition, or do I need to seek medical attention immediately?

When it comes to head injuries, especially those sustained during sports like basketball, it is crucial to be vigilant about symptoms and know when to seek medical attention. Based on your description, you experienced a direct impact to the side of your head from an elbow, which resulted in mild pain but no immediate severe symptoms such as dizziness, vomiting, or weakness. This is a positive sign, as it suggests that the injury may not be severe. However, there are several factors to consider in your situation.
Firstly, it is important to monitor for any changes in your condition. While you currently do not have severe symptoms, the presence of mild pain and the brief episode of involuntary finger movement could indicate a mild concussion or other minor neurological impact. Concussions can sometimes present with subtle symptoms that may not be immediately apparent. Therefore, it is advisable to keep a close watch on your symptoms over the next 24 to 48 hours.
Here are some key symptoms to look out for that would warrant immediate medical attention:
1. Worsening Headache: If your headache becomes more severe or does not improve with rest or over-the-counter pain relief, this could be a sign of a more serious injury.
2. Dizziness or Balance Issues: If you experience any dizziness, balance problems, or a feeling of being unsteady, these could indicate a concussion or other neurological issues.
3. Nausea or Vomiting: The onset of nausea or vomiting after a head injury is a concerning symptom and should prompt immediate medical evaluation.
4. Changes in Consciousness: If you experience confusion, difficulty waking up, or any changes in your level of consciousness, seek medical help right away.
5. Visual Disturbances: Blurred vision, double vision, or any other visual changes should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.
6. Persistent Symptoms: If you notice that your symptoms, such as the mild pain or the brief involuntary movement, persist or worsen, it is important to consult a doctor.
Given that you are currently applying ice to the affected area, this is a good practice as it can help reduce swelling and alleviate pain. However, if you notice any of the concerning symptoms mentioned above, it would be prudent to seek medical attention sooner rather than later.
In summary, while you can initially observe your symptoms due to the absence of severe signs, remain vigilant and proactive about your health. If anything changes or worsens, do not hesitate to consult a healthcare professional. It is always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to head injuries, as they can sometimes have delayed effects.
