Does receiving the nine-valent vaccine cause an early menstrual period?
Hello Doctor: I have been consistently taking Yaz (24+4 pills) for a while now, and my menstrual cycle is usually quite regular.
My next period was originally expected to start on Monday, 9/28, but after receiving the first dose of the HPV vaccine last night, my period started today, 9/26.
Could this be caused by the HPV vaccine? Should I continue taking Yaz as usual (I still have one active pink pill left for tomorrow, 9/27)? After this cycle ends, do I need to stop the medication, or should I continue taking it according to my usual schedule? Thank you.
Chen, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2020/09/26

1.
Is it caused by the nine-valent vaccine? No.
2.
Should I continue taking YAZ (I have one effective pink pill left for tomorrow, 9/27)? Depending on the purpose of use: for contraception (no need to continue); for hormone therapy (should finish the pack).
3.
At the end of this cycle, do I need to stop the medication? Or should I continue taking it as per my original cycle? No need to change.

More Info
The relationship between the HPV vaccine and menstrual cycle timing is a topic of interest for many individuals receiving the vaccine. While there is no definitive evidence linking the HPV vaccine to changes in menstrual cycles, some women report experiencing variations in their cycles after vaccination. This can include changes in timing, flow, or symptoms associated with menstruation.
In your case, you mentioned that you received the Gardasil 9 vaccine and subsequently experienced the onset of your menstrual period earlier than expected. It is important to note that various factors can influence menstrual cycles, including stress, hormonal fluctuations, changes in routine, and even vaccinations. The HPV vaccine is designed to stimulate the immune system to protect against certain strains of the human papillomavirus, and while it can cause mild side effects such as fever or fatigue, there is limited research directly linking it to menstrual irregularities.
Regarding your specific situation, it is possible that the timing of your menstrual cycle was coincidentally affected by the vaccine, but it is also plausible that other factors contributed to this change. If your menstrual cycle has been regular and you have not experienced significant stress or other changes in your lifestyle, the vaccine may not be the sole reason for the early onset of your period.
As for continuing your birth control regimen with the pill (Yaz), it is generally advisable to continue taking your medication as prescribed, unless otherwise directed by your healthcare provider. The hormonal contraceptive you are taking is designed to regulate your menstrual cycle and prevent pregnancy, and it should continue to be effective even if your cycle is slightly altered this month. You can take the remaining pink pill as scheduled and complete your cycle. There is no need to stop taking your birth control unless you have specific concerns or experience unusual side effects.
If you notice persistent changes in your menstrual cycle after receiving the vaccine or if you have any concerns about your reproductive health, it is always a good idea to consult with your healthcare provider. They can provide personalized advice based on your medical history and current health status.
In summary, while some women may experience changes in their menstrual cycles after receiving the HPV vaccine, it is not a common or well-documented side effect. Your early period could be due to a variety of factors, and it is advisable to continue taking your birth control pills as directed. If you have further questions or concerns, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for guidance.
