Numbness in the limbs?
Hello Doctor, I felt a tingling sensation below my left knee tonight.
After taking a hot bath, I noticed a slight tingling in all my limbs.
(Earlier today, I experienced a feeling of tightness and pain in my chest.) The last time I had a similar situation was on the 17th of this month, when I felt a sensation in my fingers and toes, as well as the inner side of my elbow, that felt like they were being pinched.
Before going to bed, I experienced severe soreness in my left leg.
The next morning, I had tingling from my left fingers to my wrist and in my left calf.
There was also a feeling of tightness and pain in the left side of my chest (above the chest).
I consulted my family physician at that time, and the doctor said these were atypical symptoms and advised me to continue monitoring.
I would like to ask: 1.
Is today’s tingling related to my previous experience? 2.
Does this situation require immediate medical attention? (For example, should I go to a major hospital this week?) Or should I continue to observe? 3.
If continuing to observe is recommended, what symptoms should I record that would be helpful for the doctor in assessing my condition? Also, at what point should I seek medical attention? 4.
If medical attention is advised, would you recommend going directly to a neurologist, or should I first consult my family physician for an assessment and then get a referral? Thank you.

Hello: You mentioned experiencing severe pain in your left foot.
The next morning, you felt numbness from your left fingers to your wrist and in your left calf.
There is also a feeling of pressure and pain in the left side of your chest (above the chest).
It may be necessary to consider lesions above the cervical spine.
I recommend that you consult a neurologist for discussion and treatment.
Typically, the physician will arrange for electrophysiological studies and imaging examinations.
Wishing you good health and peace.

When experiencing numbness in the limbs, especially when accompanied by other symptoms such as chest pain, it is crucial to understand the potential implications and when to seek medical attention. Based on your description, you have been experiencing episodes of numbness and tingling in your left leg and arm, as well as chest discomfort. Here’s a detailed response to your questions:
1. Connection Between Symptoms: The numbness and tingling you felt in your left leg and arm could indeed be related to your previous experiences. Numbness can arise from various causes, including nerve compression, circulatory issues, or even neurological conditions. The fact that you have had similar symptoms before suggests a pattern that should be evaluated further. Additionally, the chest pain you mentioned is particularly concerning, as it could indicate a cardiovascular issue, especially if it is accompanied by numbness on one side of the body.
2. Need for Immediate Medical Attention: Given the combination of symptoms—numbness, tingling, and chest pain—it is advisable to seek medical attention promptly. While your primary care physician suggested observing the symptoms, the presence of chest pain, especially if it is new or worsening, warrants immediate evaluation. It is better to err on the side of caution, as these symptoms could indicate serious conditions such as a heart attack or stroke, particularly if they are unilateral (affecting one side of the body).
3. Symptom Tracking for Medical Evaluation: If you choose to continue monitoring your symptoms before seeking medical attention, it is essential to keep a detailed record. Note the following:
- The duration and frequency of numbness or tingling episodes.
- Any associated symptoms, such as pain, weakness, or changes in vision or speech.
- Triggers that may exacerbate or alleviate the symptoms (e.g., physical activity, stress, or changes in position).
- Any changes in your overall health, such as fatigue, headaches, or changes in bowel or bladder function.
If you notice that the numbness persists for more than a few minutes, worsens, or is accompanied by other concerning symptoms (like severe headache, confusion, or difficulty speaking), you should seek medical attention immediately.
4. Choosing the Right Medical Specialist: In terms of which specialist to see, it may be beneficial to start with a neurologist, especially given the neurological nature of your symptoms. A neurologist can perform specific tests, such as nerve conduction studies or electromyography (EMG), to assess nerve function and identify any underlying issues. However, if you are unable to see a neurologist immediately, starting with your primary care physician is also a valid option. They can evaluate your symptoms and provide a referral to a specialist if necessary.
In conclusion, while it is essential to monitor your symptoms, the combination of numbness, tingling, and chest pain should prompt you to seek medical evaluation sooner rather than later. Early diagnosis and intervention can significantly impact the management of potential underlying conditions. Please prioritize your health and do not hesitate to seek help if you feel your symptoms are worsening or if you have any concerns.
