Numbness in the limbs?
Dear Dr.
Lai,
My mother has been experiencing numbness in her limbs for the past year or two.
Initially, it occurred about once a week, but recently it has increased to two or three times a week.
Could this be due to poor blood circulation? Interestingly, my mother exercises by riding a bicycle for about one to two hours every morning around five or six o'clock.
Why is she still experiencing these symptoms? Is it necessary for her to seek medical attention? If so, which specialty should she consult? Thank you for taking the time to respond amidst your busy schedule!
Sincerely,
Xiao Guizi

Hello: In response to your question, there are many potential causes for numbness in the limbs, often related to issues with the circulatory or nervous systems.
If the cause of the symptoms is unclear, it is advisable to first consult a family medicine physician or seek care at a neurology outpatient clinic.

Dear 小桂子,
Thank you for reaching out regarding your mother's condition. The symptoms you describe—numbness in the limbs occurring more frequently—are indeed concerning and warrant further evaluation. While it is possible that these symptoms could be related to blood circulation issues, there are several potential causes that should be considered.
Numbness in the limbs can arise from various conditions, including peripheral neuropathy, which is often associated with diabetes, vitamin deficiencies, or nerve compression syndromes such as carpal tunnel syndrome or sciatica. Additionally, cervical or lumbar spine issues can lead to nerve root compression, resulting in numbness or tingling sensations in the arms or legs. Other potential causes include multiple sclerosis, stroke, or transient ischemic attacks (TIAs), which are often referred to as "mini-strokes."
Given that your mother is experiencing these symptoms more frequently, it is advisable to seek medical attention. A healthcare professional can perform a thorough assessment, including a detailed medical history, physical examination, and possibly some diagnostic tests. These tests may include blood work to check for diabetes, vitamin levels, and thyroid function, as well as imaging studies like MRI or CT scans to evaluate for any structural issues in the spine or brain.
In terms of which specialist to consult, starting with a primary care physician is a good approach. They can evaluate her symptoms and, if necessary, refer her to a neurologist for further investigation. A neurologist specializes in conditions affecting the nervous system and can provide a more in-depth assessment of her symptoms.
It is also worth noting that regular exercise, such as cycling, is generally beneficial for circulation and overall health. However, if your mother is experiencing numbness despite her exercise routine, it may suggest an underlying issue that needs to be addressed.
In summary, I recommend that your mother see a healthcare provider to discuss her symptoms. Early intervention can be crucial in managing any underlying conditions effectively. If you have any further questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out.
Wishing you and your mother good health,
Best regards.
