Phlegm in the throat?

Hello Doctor, since April of this year, I have been experiencing a sensation of phlegm stuck in my throat, and sometimes when I eat, I feel a choking sensation.
I also have a feeling of post-nasal drip, but I do not cough.
I frequently experience burping, sometimes just air, but other times it feels like liquid is coming up.
Occasionally, I feel air trapped in my throat, and at night, I also feel air rising to my throat.
I would like to ask the doctor what this might be.
If I need to see a doctor, which specialty should I consult?

Huang, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2020/10/16

Dr. Ye Qianyu reply Family Medicine

Hello! Based on your description, belching accompanied by liquid discharge may be a symptom of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), which can be evaluated by a gastroenterologist.
Symptoms of post-nasal drip can be assessed by an otolaryngologist.

More Info

Understanding throat mucus buildup can be quite complex, as it can stem from various underlying causes. Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing a combination of symptoms that may be related to post-nasal drip, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), or even allergies. Let’s break down these potential causes and when you should seek medical help.

Possible Causes of Throat Mucus Buildup
1. Post-Nasal Drip: This occurs when excess mucus accumulates in the nasal passages and drips down the back of the throat. It can be caused by allergies, sinus infections, or colds. Symptoms often include a sensation of mucus in the throat, frequent throat clearing, and a cough that may worsen at night.

2. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): GERD can cause stomach acid to flow back into the esophagus, leading to a sensation of mucus or fluid in the throat. This can also cause a feeling of air or fluid rising, which you described as "air running up" into your throat. Symptoms of GERD may include heartburn, regurgitation, and difficulty swallowing.

3. Allergies: Allergic reactions can lead to increased mucus production in response to allergens such as pollen, dust, or pet dander. This can result in post-nasal drip and throat irritation.

4. Infections: Viral or bacterial infections can lead to increased mucus production as the body tries to fight off the infection. This can also lead to a sore throat and difficulty swallowing.

5. Environmental Factors: Dry air, pollution, or irritants like smoke can also contribute to throat irritation and mucus buildup.

When to Seek Help
You should consider seeking medical attention if you experience any of the following:
- Persistent Symptoms: If your symptoms have lasted for more than a few weeks without improvement.

- Severe Discomfort: If you are experiencing significant pain or discomfort in your throat.

- Difficulty Breathing or Swallowing: If you have trouble breathing or swallowing, this could indicate a more serious condition.

- Fever or Other Symptoms: If you develop a fever, chills, or other systemic symptoms, it may indicate an infection that requires treatment.

Which Specialist to See
Given your symptoms, the most appropriate specialists to consult would be:
- Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) Specialist: An ENT doctor can evaluate your throat and nasal passages for any abnormalities, infections, or other issues contributing to your symptoms.

- Gastroenterologist: If GERD is suspected, a gastroenterologist can help diagnose and manage this condition, potentially through lifestyle changes or medications.

- Allergist: If allergies are suspected, an allergist can perform tests to identify specific allergens and recommend appropriate treatments.

Conclusion
In summary, throat mucus buildup can be caused by a variety of factors, including post-nasal drip, GERD, allergies, infections, and environmental irritants. If your symptoms persist or worsen, it is important to seek medical advice from an appropriate specialist. Early intervention can help alleviate discomfort and address any underlying conditions effectively. Remember to keep track of your symptoms, as this information will be valuable for your healthcare provider in determining the best course of action.
