Difficulty breathing due to phlegm in the throat?

Hello, doctor.
Since early June, I have been experiencing a recurring sensation of mucus stuck in my throat for about a month.
Sometimes it affects my breathing (causing wheezing) and I have a dry, painful throat.
I have previously undergone an electrocardiogram and ultrasound, both of which showed no abnormalities.
What could be the cause of this? Which specialty should I consult for further examination? How can I alleviate these symptoms? Thank you!

Angel, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2021/07/07

Hello: Your symptoms are more indicative of post-nasal drip; it is recommended that you see an otolaryngologist.

The symptoms you are experiencing, such as the sensation of mucus stuck in your throat, difficulty breathing, and throat discomfort, can be attributed to several potential causes. Given your history of nasal congestion and the recent onset of these symptoms, it is important to consider the interplay between nasal and throat conditions, particularly in the context of allergies, sinus issues, and potential airway obstruction.

One common cause of the sensation of mucus in the throat is post-nasal drip, which occurs when excess mucus from the nasal passages drips down the back of the throat. This can lead to irritation, coughing, and a feeling of congestion. Allergies, particularly allergic rhinitis, can exacerbate this condition by increasing mucus production and causing inflammation in the nasal passages. Given your mention of nasal congestion and a history of allergies, it is plausible that your symptoms are related to an allergic reaction or sinusitis.

Additionally, the feeling of breathlessness or difficulty breathing can be linked to several factors. If the nasal passages are blocked, it can lead to mouth breathing, which is less efficient than nasal breathing and can cause a feeling of breathlessness. Furthermore, if there is significant mucus accumulation, it can obstruct the airway, leading to a sensation of tightness or difficulty in breathing. This is particularly concerning if you experience these symptoms while lying down, as gravity can exacerbate post-nasal drip and airway obstruction.

Your mention of a dry throat and discomfort could also indicate a possible throat infection or inflammation, such as pharyngitis or laryngitis, which can occur alongside post-nasal drip. Chronic irritation from mucus can lead to inflammation of the throat tissues, resulting in pain and discomfort.

To address your symptoms, it is advisable to consult with an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) specialist. They can perform a thorough examination, which may include a nasal endoscopy to visualize the nasal passages and throat, as well as allergy testing if indicated. This will help identify any underlying conditions such as chronic sinusitis, nasal polyps, or other anatomical issues that may be contributing to your symptoms.

In the meantime, there are several strategies you can employ to alleviate your symptoms:
1. Hydration: Drink plenty of fluids to help thin mucus and keep your throat moist. Warm teas or broths can be soothing.

2. Saline Nasal Rinse: Using a saline nasal spray or rinse can help clear mucus from the nasal passages and reduce post-nasal drip.

3. Humidifier: Using a humidifier in your home, especially in your bedroom, can help maintain moisture in the air and soothe irritated throat tissues.

4. Avoid Irritants: Stay away from smoke, strong odors, and allergens that may exacerbate your symptoms.

5. Over-the-Counter Medications: Antihistamines can help reduce mucus production if allergies are a contributing factor. Decongestants may also provide relief from nasal congestion.

6. Throat Lozenges: Sucking on throat lozenges can help soothe throat irritation and provide temporary relief.

7. Elevate Your Head While Sleeping: This can help reduce post-nasal drip and improve breathing during the night.

In summary, your symptoms may be related to post-nasal drip due to allergies or sinus issues, leading to throat discomfort and breathing difficulties. Consulting with an ENT specialist will provide you with a clearer diagnosis and tailored treatment options. Meanwhile, implementing the above strategies may help alleviate your discomfort and improve your breathing.
