Discharge and menstrual issues?

Hello, doctor: Today, when I was taking a shower, I noticed that there was a slightly yellow-green discharge on my underwear.
However, there is no itching at all, and while there is an odor, it is not foul (just the normal scent that the genital area tends to have).
I would like to know if I need to go to the hospital or if I should just observe it for now.
I have been using a period tracking app, and it shows that my period is 5 days late.
I have never engaged in sexual intercourse, so I am a bit worried and would like to ask for your advice.
Thank you!

Xiao Mi, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2020/10/21

Hello, in the case of abnormal vaginal discharge, it is advisable to consult a physician if you experience the following: 1.
An unusual increase in volume that causes discomfort, to the point where you may need to use panty liners.
2.
Changes in the color and consistency of the discharge.
3.
An unpleasant odor.
4.
Accompanying symptoms such as itching or burning in the vulva or vagina, lower abdominal pain, which may indicate vaginitis or pelvic inflammatory disease.
The physician will arrange for relevant examinations and treatments based on your symptoms.

There are many factors that can affect the menstrual cycle or cause bleeding outside of menstruation, including age, environment, lifestyle, stress, emotional instability, weight changes, medications, emergency contraception, diet, polycystic ovary syndrome, uterine or cervical lesions, infections, ovulation, pregnancy, and breastfeeding.
If your symptoms persist or worsen, it is recommended to see a gynecologist to check for hormonal imbalances or other causes.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health, Dr.
Zhang.

Understanding abnormal discharge and menstrual irregularities can be concerning, especially when accompanied by changes in color, consistency, or odor. In your case, you mentioned noticing a yellow-green discharge that is not accompanied by itching and has a mild odor. Additionally, you noted that your menstrual period is five days late and that you have not engaged in sexual intercourse.

Firstly, let's address the discharge. A yellow-green color can sometimes indicate the presence of an infection, such as bacterial vaginosis or a sexually transmitted infection (STI) like trichomoniasis. However, the absence of itching and the mild odor you described may suggest that it is not a typical infection. Normal vaginal discharge can vary in color and consistency throughout the menstrual cycle due to hormonal changes, and it can sometimes appear slightly yellowish without indicating a problem.

Given that you are experiencing a delay in your menstrual cycle, it is important to consider a few factors. Stress, changes in weight, exercise habits, and hormonal imbalances can all contribute to menstrual irregularities. Since you mentioned that you have not had sexual intercourse, the likelihood of pregnancy is low, but it is still a good idea to rule out any other underlying issues.

Here are some recommendations:
1. Observation: If the discharge does not change significantly in color, consistency, or odor, and if you do not develop any additional symptoms (such as itching, burning, or discomfort), you may choose to monitor the situation for a few days.
2. Menstrual Tracking: Continue to use your menstrual tracking app. If your period does not arrive within a week, it would be wise to take a home pregnancy test to rule out pregnancy, even if you have not had intercourse. Sometimes, other factors can lead to a missed period.

3. Consultation: If the discharge persists, worsens, or if you develop any new symptoms (such as pain, fever, or significant changes in odor), it would be advisable to consult a healthcare provider. They can perform a thorough examination, possibly including a pelvic exam and laboratory tests, to determine the cause of the discharge and any potential infections.

4. Lifestyle Factors: Consider any recent changes in your life that might affect your menstrual cycle, such as increased stress, changes in diet, or exercise routines. These can all play a role in menstrual irregularities.

In summary, while your symptoms may not indicate an immediate cause for alarm, it is essential to remain vigilant. If you notice any changes or if your period does not arrive soon, seeking medical advice would be prudent. A healthcare provider can offer personalized guidance and treatment options based on a comprehensive evaluation of your symptoms and medical history.
