Prolonged Menstrual Periods: Impact of Propolis and Fibroids - Obstetrics and Gynecology

Prolonged menstruation

Hello doctor, I would like to ask about my situation.
My menstrual period lasted for 18 days with heavy bleeding and blood clots.
I went for a consultation and had an ultrasound, and the doctor said my uterus appeared normal.
I also had a pelvic examination and an endometrial biopsy.
I was prescribed hemostatic medication, and after taking one dose, the bleeding decreased significantly, stopping completely the next day.
However, I have been experiencing brown discharge and abdominal discomfort since then.
On the third day after the bleeding stopped, I had sexual intercourse.
I have uterine fibroids, and I asked my doctor if taking propolis during my menstrual period could affect the menstrual cycle by prolonging it or increasing the amount of bleeding.
I recently started taking propolis.
Is it safe for me to take propolis with my fibroids? Also, what about propolis probiotics?

Dr. Huang Yiwen reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Prolonged menstrual periods, medically known as menorrhagia, can be influenced by various factors, including hormonal imbalances, uterine fibroids, and lifestyle choices. In your case, the presence of uterine fibroids may be contributing to the extended duration and volume of your menstrual bleeding. Fibroids are benign tumors of the uterus that can lead to heavy menstrual bleeding, prolonged periods, and pelvic discomfort.

You mentioned that your menstrual period lasted for 18 days, accompanied by heavy bleeding and blood clots. This is indeed concerning and warrants thorough evaluation, which you have already undertaken through ultrasound and endometrial sampling. The fact that your doctor found your uterus to be normal on ultrasound is reassuring, but it does not entirely rule out the impact of fibroids on your menstrual cycle.

Regarding the use of propolis, a natural substance derived from bees, there is limited scientific evidence on its effects on menstrual cycles, particularly in women with fibroids. Propolis is known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, and some people use it for various health benefits, including immune support and wound healing. However, its direct impact on menstrual bleeding or fibroid growth is not well-studied.
It is essential to consider that dietary supplements, including propolis, can interact with medications and may have varying effects on individuals. While propolis is generally considered safe for most people, its effects on those with specific conditions, such as fibroids, are not well-documented. Therefore, it is advisable to consult your healthcare provider before continuing or starting any new supplement, especially if you have existing health concerns like fibroids.

As for the brown discharge you experienced after your period, this is often normal and can be attributed to the body expelling old blood or tissue. However, if you continue to experience unusual symptoms, such as persistent pain or changes in your menstrual cycle, it is crucial to follow up with your healthcare provider for further evaluation.

In summary, while propolis may have health benefits, its specific effects on menstrual cycles and fibroids are not well-established. It is essential to maintain open communication with your healthcare provider regarding any supplements you are taking, especially in the context of existing conditions like uterine fibroids. They can provide personalized advice based on your medical history and current health status. If you have ongoing concerns about your menstrual cycle, fibroids, or any new symptoms, do not hesitate to seek further medical advice.
