Urethral discharge
Hello doctor, I have noticed a white discharge from my glans, and I experience a sharp pain in the midshaft of my penis when urinating.
There are no issues with frequent urination or blood in my urine.
Could this be gonorrhea, or is it a general penile inflammation?

More Info
Urethral discharge, especially when accompanied by symptoms such as pain during urination, can be concerning and warrants a thorough evaluation. Based on your description, the white discharge from the glans penis and the sharp pain in the mid-shaft during urination could indicate a few potential conditions, with gonorrhea being one of the possibilities.
Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae. It is known to cause urethritis, which can lead to symptoms such as purulent (pus-like) discharge from the urethra, pain during urination, and sometimes even swelling or discomfort in the genital area. However, it is important to note that not all urethral discharge is due to gonorrhea. Other STIs, such as chlamydia, can also present with similar symptoms.
In addition to STIs, other non-infectious causes of urethral discharge and pain may include:
1. Urethritis: This is inflammation of the urethra that can be caused by infections (bacterial, viral, or fungal) or irritants (such as soaps, lotions, or spermicides).
2. Balanitis: This refers to inflammation of the glans penis, which can occur due to infections, poor hygiene, or irritants.
3. Prostatitis: Inflammation of the prostate gland can cause pain during urination and may lead to discharge.
4. Urinary Tract Infection (UTI): Although more common in females, males can also experience UTIs that may present with similar symptoms.
5. Allergic Reactions or Irritation: Sometimes, products used for personal hygiene or sexual activity can cause irritation leading to discharge and pain.
Given your symptoms, it is crucial to seek medical attention. A healthcare provider will likely perform a physical examination and may recommend laboratory tests, including a urinalysis and cultures of the discharge, to identify the causative agent. Testing for STIs, including gonorrhea and chlamydia, is also essential.
It is important not to self-diagnose or delay seeking treatment, as untreated STIs can lead to serious complications, including infertility and chronic pain. Additionally, if you are sexually active, it is advisable to inform your partner(s) so they can also get tested and treated if necessary.
In conclusion, while gonorrhea is a possibility, other conditions could also be responsible for your symptoms. A thorough evaluation by a healthcare professional is necessary to determine the exact cause and appropriate treatment. Please do not hesitate to reach out to a healthcare provider for further assistance.
