Urethral discharge
Hello doctor, I have noticed a white discharge from my glans, and I experience a sharp pain in the midsection of my penis when urinating.
There are no issues with frequent urination or blood in my urine.
Could this be gonorrhea, or is it more likely a general penile inflammation?

Hello: If symptoms occur a few days after unprotected sexual intercourse, it could potentially be gonorrhea.
If there was no unprotected sexual activity, it is likely not gonorrhea, but rather just an infection.
Wishing you good health.

Urethral discharge, particularly when accompanied by symptoms such as pain during urination, can be concerning and warrants a thorough evaluation. Based on your description of a white discharge from the glans penis and a stinging sensation in the mid-portion of the penis during urination, there are several potential causes to consider.
One of the most common causes of urethral discharge in males is a sexually transmitted infection (STI), with gonorrhea (caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae) and chlamydia (caused by Chlamydia trachomatis) being the most prevalent. These infections can lead to urethritis, which is inflammation of the urethra, and is often characterized by discharge and painful urination. The white discharge you are experiencing could be indicative of such an infection, especially if you have had unprotected sexual contact.
However, other conditions could also lead to similar symptoms. For instance, non-specific urethritis (NSU) can occur due to various bacteria that are not classified as STIs. Additionally, conditions such as balanitis (inflammation of the glans penis), or posthitis (inflammation of the foreskin), can also cause discharge and discomfort. These conditions may arise from poor hygiene, irritants, or infections that are not necessarily sexually transmitted.
It is important to note that while the absence of symptoms such as frequent urination or hematuria (blood in urine) may seem reassuring, they do not rule out the possibility of an STI or other infections. The presence of pain during urination is a significant symptom that should not be overlooked.
Given your symptoms, it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly. A healthcare provider will likely perform a physical examination and may recommend laboratory tests, including a urethral swab for culture and sensitivity, as well as tests for STIs. This will help determine the exact cause of your symptoms and guide appropriate treatment.
In terms of treatment, if an STI is confirmed, antibiotics will be prescribed to clear the infection. It is also essential to inform any sexual partners so they can be tested and treated if necessary to prevent reinfection and further spread of the disease.
In conclusion, while your symptoms may suggest a possible STI such as gonorrhea or chlamydia, other conditions could also be responsible. It is imperative to consult a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Early intervention can help prevent complications and ensure a swift recovery. Remember, sexual health is an important aspect of overall well-being, and seeking help is a responsible step.
