Taking Dailian to induce an earlier menstrual period?
Hello Doctor: I have been taking Dailian regularly for the past six months and have not experienced significant side effects.
I started this cycle on November 3rd, and it has been about two weeks.
However, I have an important event next week and would like my period to come this week (November 16-20).
I would like to know if I stop taking the medication now to induce my period this week, and then resume taking it seven days later, will it affect the contraceptive effectiveness? My last unprotected intercourse was on November 14, and I have sexual intercourse regularly 1-2 times a week; my last period was on October 22.
Thank you for your response!

Hello, you should stop the medication and start taking it again on the fifth day after your period begins.
Wishing you good health.

When considering the use of contraceptives like Dailian (which contains cyproterone and ethinylestradiol), it is important to understand how stopping the medication can affect both menstruation and contraceptive efficacy. Dailian is a combined oral contraceptive pill (OCP) that works primarily by preventing ovulation, thickening cervical mucus, and altering the uterine lining to prevent implantation.
If you decide to stop taking Dailian early to induce menstruation, there are several factors to consider:
1. Menstrual Cycle Regulation: Stopping the pill can lead to a withdrawal bleed, which is similar to a menstrual period. This typically occurs within a few days after discontinuation. However, the timing can vary from person to person. If your goal is to induce menstruation for an important event, stopping the pill may achieve that, but it is not guaranteed that your body will respond immediately or predictably.
2. Contraceptive Efficacy: When you stop taking Dailian, its contraceptive effects will diminish. If you have unprotected intercourse after stopping the pill, especially if it is within the first week of stopping, there is a risk of unintended pregnancy. The effectiveness of the pill is contingent upon consistent daily use, and any interruption can lead to ovulation if you are not on the pill.
3. Timing of Resuming the Pill: If you stop taking Dailian and then resume it after a week, you may not be protected against pregnancy during that time. It is generally recommended to use an alternative form of contraception (like condoms) during the week off and for at least the first seven days after restarting the pill. This is because it takes time for the hormones in the pill to build up in your system again to provide effective contraception.
4. Potential Side Effects: Stopping and starting hormonal contraceptives can lead to side effects such as irregular bleeding, mood changes, or other hormonal fluctuations. If you have been on Dailian for an extended period, your body may take some time to readjust after stopping.
5. Consultation with a Healthcare Provider: It is always best to discuss any changes in your contraceptive regimen with your healthcare provider. They can provide personalized advice based on your health history and specific circumstances. They may also suggest alternative methods to manage your menstrual cycle without compromising contraceptive effectiveness.
In summary, while stopping Dailian may induce menstruation, it can also reduce contraceptive protection. If you choose to stop the pill, be aware of the potential risks of unintended pregnancy and consider using backup contraception during the transition. Always consult with a healthcare professional before making changes to your medication regimen to ensure that you are making informed decisions that prioritize your health and well-being.
