Postprandial urine turbidity?
Hello, sometimes after a while of eating, my urine becomes cloudy, resembling miso soup with some floating particles.
The smell is similar to usual, and there are small bubbles, but very few.
After drinking water, the next time I urinate, it returns to a clear state.
Is this condition normal? I have a history of kidney stones, so I appreciate your help in clarifying this.

Dr. Du Shixi reply Urology
Hello: It may be a good idea to check a urine test during times of high frequency.
If the results are normal, it indicates that more fluids need to be consumed.
Since there are kidney stones, regular follow-up with X-rays or ultrasounds is also necessary.
Wishing you good health.

More Info
Post-meal cloudy urine can be a concerning symptom for many individuals, especially for those with a history of urinary issues such as kidney stones. The appearance of cloudy urine after meals can be attributed to several factors, and understanding these can help alleviate concerns.
Possible Causes of Cloudy Urine After Meals
1. Dietary Factors: Certain foods can influence the clarity of urine. For instance, high-protein meals, particularly those rich in meat or dairy, can lead to increased protein levels in urine, resulting in a cloudy appearance. Foods high in purines, such as organ meats and certain fish, can also contribute to this phenomenon.
2. Dehydration: If you are not adequately hydrated, your urine may become concentrated, leading to cloudiness. After eating, if you drink water, your urine may clear up, indicating that hydration plays a significant role in urine clarity.
3. Urinary Tract Infection (UTI): Cloudy urine can sometimes indicate a urinary tract infection, especially if accompanied by other symptoms such as burning during urination, frequent urination, or an unusual odor. However, if the cloudiness is only post-meal and not persistent, it may not be related to an infection.
4. Kidney Stones: Given your history of kidney stones, it is essential to consider that certain dietary choices can lead to the formation of crystals in the urine, which can cause cloudiness. Foods high in oxalates (like spinach and nuts) or excessive salt can contribute to this issue.
5. Metabolic Conditions: Conditions such as diabetes can lead to changes in urine appearance. If your body is not effectively managing blood sugar levels, it can lead to the presence of glucose in the urine, which may cause cloudiness.
When to Seek Medical Attention
While occasional cloudy urine after meals may not be a cause for concern, certain signs warrant a visit to a healthcare provider:
- Persistent cloudiness that does not resolve with hydration.
- Accompanying symptoms such as pain, burning sensation during urination, fever, or back pain.
- A significant change in urine color or odor that persists over time.
Recommendations
1. Hydration: Ensure you are drinking enough water throughout the day, especially after meals. This can help dilute your urine and reduce cloudiness.
2. Diet Monitoring: Keep track of your meals and note if certain foods consistently lead to cloudy urine. Adjusting your diet may help alleviate the issue.
3. Regular Check-ups: Given your history of kidney stones, regular check-ups with a healthcare provider can help monitor your urinary health and prevent future complications.
4. Urinalysis: If the issue persists, consider getting a urinalysis done. This test can help identify any underlying infections, the presence of crystals, or other abnormalities in your urine.
In conclusion, while post-meal cloudy urine can be benign and related to dietary choices or hydration status, it is essential to remain vigilant, especially with a history of urinary issues. If you notice any concerning symptoms or if the cloudiness persists, seeking medical advice is the best course of action.
