Pulsation in the abdomen?

Hello Doctor, recently I have been experiencing some weight loss, and my current weight is 173 cm and 62 kg.
While lying down, I can feel a pulsating sensation above my navel (there are no hard lumps, just a soft abdomen, but I can feel the heartbeat).
However, in other positions, I can't really feel it.
There is no discomfort, but I just noticed it suddenly and am a bit confused.
Could this be the abdominal aorta or something else? I have pressed the same area on my family members, and most of them couldn't feel it, although one family member could feel it in the morning but not at night...
it's puzzling.
Should I see a doctor about this? If so, which specialty should I consult? Thank you.

In underweight patients, it is indeed possible to palpate the pulsation of the aorta.
If there are no risk factors for aortic aneurysm, such as hypertension, there is no need for concern.

Feeling a pulse in your abdomen, especially when lying flat, can be a source of concern for many individuals. However, it is important to understand the context and the physiological mechanisms behind this sensation. The abdominal aorta, which is the largest artery in the abdomen, runs down the center of the abdomen and can sometimes be felt as a pulsation, particularly in individuals who are leaner or have less abdominal fat. This is often more noticeable when lying down, as the pressure from the surrounding tissues is reduced.

In your case, since you mentioned that you are 173 cm tall and weigh 62 kg, it is possible that your body composition allows for the pulsation of the abdominal aorta to be felt more easily. The absence of any hard masses or discomfort is a reassuring sign. It is also worth noting that variations in the ability to palpate this pulse among family members can be attributed to differences in body composition, fat distribution, and even the time of day, as abdominal contents can shift.

However, there are a few considerations to keep in mind. If the pulsation is accompanied by any symptoms such as pain, discomfort, changes in bowel habits, or any other unusual symptoms, it would be prudent to seek medical advice. Additionally, if you notice any significant changes in your weight or if you have concerns about your overall health, a consultation with a healthcare provider is advisable.

In terms of what type of doctor to see, a primary care physician or a gastroenterologist would be appropriate. They can perform a thorough evaluation, which may include a physical examination and possibly imaging studies if deemed necessary. These assessments can help rule out any underlying conditions that may need attention.

It is also important to consider your overall health and lifestyle. If you have been experiencing weight loss, it may be beneficial to evaluate your diet, exercise habits, and any potential stressors in your life. Sometimes, weight loss can be a result of increased physical activity, dietary changes, or even stress and anxiety. If you find that you are feeling anxious about your health, it may be helpful to incorporate stress-reducing techniques such as mindfulness, yoga, or other relaxation methods into your routine.

In summary, feeling a pulse in your abdomen can be a normal physiological occurrence, especially in lean individuals. However, if you have any concerns or if this sensation is accompanied by other symptoms, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional. They can provide reassurance, conduct necessary evaluations, and help you understand your body better. Remember, your health is important, and seeking guidance when in doubt is always a good practice.
