How to treat pubic lice?
I went to the hospital for an examination on November 23, and it has been confirmed that I have pubic lice.
I only have lice in my thighs and groin area, with very few on my calves.
However, I previously saw one on my hand, which I have already removed.
I have only shaved my groin and thighs, and I have also shaved my toes, but I haven't shaved my armpit hair or chest.
Is it possible for pubic lice to grow in those areas?
The doctor prescribed me Permethrin 5% cream.
Why is it recommended to apply it only once a week and not daily? After applying it, I noticed a lot of white debris afterward; what is that? Is it the remains of lice that came into contact with the medication? I found online that even if I shave and use the prescribed cream, it may only clean the surface, and there could still be lice present internally, as they can live on the body.
How can I clean the internal parts? I want to completely eradicate the pubic lice, but I couldn't find any information online, so I would like to ask how to completely eliminate them both internally and externally.

More Info
To effectively eliminate pubic lice (Pthirus pubis), it is essential to understand both the nature of the infestation and the appropriate treatment methods. Pubic lice are small parasitic insects that primarily infest the coarse hair of the genital area but can also be found in other areas with coarse hair, such as the armpits, chest, and even eyelashes. They are transmitted through close physical contact, often during sexual activity, but can also be spread through infested clothing, bedding, or towels.
Treatment with Permethrin 5% Cream
The medication prescribed to you, Permethrin 5% cream, is a topical insecticide that is effective in killing lice and their eggs (nits). It is important to follow the instructions provided by your healthcare provider regarding the application of this cream. The reason it is recommended to apply it once a week rather than daily is to allow your skin to recover and to minimize potential irritation. Frequent application can lead to skin irritation and does not necessarily enhance the effectiveness of the treatment.
After applying the cream, it is common to see dead lice and nits, which may appear as white specks. These are indeed the remnants of lice that have been killed by the medication. It is crucial to comb through the hair with a fine-toothed comb after treatment to remove these dead lice and nits effectively.
Addressing Concerns About Hair Removal
Shaving the pubic area can help in managing lice by making it easier to see and treat the infestation. However, it is not a guaranteed method of prevention or elimination. Lice can still survive on the body and in areas where hair has not been removed. Therefore, while shaving may assist in treatment, it is not a standalone solution.
Internal Infestation Misconception
It is a common misconception that pubic lice can infest the body internally. Pubic lice are external parasites and do not burrow into the skin or live inside the body. They remain on the hair and skin surface, feeding on blood. Therefore, there is no need for an internal cleansing method; focusing on external treatment is sufficient.
Additional Steps for Complete Elimination
1. Follow-Up Treatment: It is often recommended to repeat the treatment after one week to ensure that any newly hatched lice are also eliminated. This is because the eggs can survive the initial treatment.
2. Wash Bedding and Clothing: All clothing, bedding, and towels used by the infested person should be washed in hot water and dried on a high heat setting to kill any remaining lice or nits. Items that cannot be washed can be sealed in a plastic bag for two weeks to ensure any lice die off.
3. Avoid Close Contact: To prevent re-infestation, avoid close physical contact with others until the infestation is completely resolved. Inform any sexual partners so they can also seek treatment if necessary.
4. Regular Inspection: After treatment, regularly check for any signs of lice or nits to ensure that the infestation has been fully resolved.
5. Consult Your Doctor: If you continue to see signs of lice after following treatment protocols, consult your healthcare provider for further evaluation and possible alternative treatments.
In conclusion, effectively eliminating pubic lice requires a combination of topical treatment, hygiene practices, and preventive measures. By adhering to the prescribed treatment plan and taking additional steps to manage your environment, you can successfully eradicate pubic lice and prevent future infestations. If you have any further concerns or questions, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for personalized advice.
